MT. EDEN TRAMS

EXTENSION OPENS SOON FEECER-BUSES TO STOP In view of the early completion of the Mount Eden tram extension, the Transport Board will terminate certain feeder-bus services operating to the present terminus. The services affected are those running from the present terminus to Landscape Road and Hayr Road via the Three Kings Road on week days, the service from the present terminus to Landscape Road, Hillsboro* and Waikowhai on Sundays and holidays, that operating from Greenwood’s Corner to Hillsboro’ on Sundays, and certain school trips. The manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, reported that as the tramwa.v extension from the present terminus at Penearrow Avenue (Mount Eden) would be opened for traffic to Rewa Street on Sunday, October 5, reorganisation of the bus services adjacent would be necessary. He recommended that the feeder services at present operated by the board lie discontinued from that date, and that applications be invited from private operators for the establishment of feeder services from the new- terminus, or alternatively from the Dominion Road tramway terminus at the intersection of Mount Albert Road to Hillsboro’ and Waikowhai on Sundays and holidays. Mr. Ford recommended that the following school trips which were run at a loss, be discontinued:-*—From the. present terminus at Pencarrow Ave. (Mt. Eden) at 8.40 a.m. via Mt. Eden Road. Shackleton Road, Dominion Road and Mt. Albert Road to Mt. Roski 11 School. Return trip 3.5 p.m. tx Mr. Roskill School, from the present terminus at Pencarrow Ave. (Mt. Eden) at 8.45 a.in. via Mt. Eden Road Stokes Road, Epsom Ave., and Manukau Road to St. Cuthbert’s College. Return trip 3.30 to the present terminus at Mt. Eden; from the Mt. Roskill School at 10.30 a.m. to the Onehunga Technical School. Return trip at 12.30 (Tuesdays and Thursdays).

In moving the adoption of the report the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Alluni, said that if the board maintained the services mentioned it would lose £4OO a year. He moved also that the education authorities concerned be asked to subsidise the school buses, otherwise the board could not continue them. Ho suggested that applications be invited from private .operators for feeder services as Mr. Ford outlined. Mr. E. IT. Potter contended that it

was impossible to make feeder services pay; they would end in disaster. What private persons would be offered was a through service.

“We can first call applications and see how we get on,” observed Mr. Allum. That course was agreed to and Mr. Ford’s report adopted.
