EARLY DAYS RECALLED

ONEHUNGA ORPHANS’ CLUB Music, mirth, and humour characterised the meeting of the Onehunga Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening, when Past-President Bro. T. H. Pardington had charge of the gavel. There was an unusually large number of members and guests present, including representatives of the Auckland, Devonport, Otahuhu. and Papakura Orphans’ Clubs, also the chairman (Mr. W. C. Kimble) and members of the Onehunga Fire Board and brigade, of which Bro. Pardington is an honorary life member. In welcoming the visitors, he recounted how, in the early days of the club, it had been indebted to the fire brigade for the use of its social hall, and it was largely owing to the brigade’s cc-operation then that the Orphans' Club had been successfully launched. Bros. A. A. Hough, G. V. Pearce, and Maxwell Walker, in amusing addresses, acknowledged the chairman’s welcome on behalf of the Devonport. Otahuhu, and Auckland Orphans’ Ulub« respectively. The evenly balanced singing of the Tramway Choir of 25 voices was much appreciated, and the chairman paid a special compliment to Bro. Duncan Black, the conductor, on the successful results of his careful training and leadership. Their contributions, “Sweet and Low” and “Soldiers’ Chorus” fully merited the applause with which they were received. The club’s orchestra, under Bro. T. J. Lignton, responded to several recalls for its finished work in “Orpheus of the Underworld.” “Stuc?.ents’ Waltz,” “The Stein Song,” and other popular selections. Similar appreciation was accorded to Bro. Reg. Pawson for his ariistic rendering of favourite airs on the violoncello. Bros. F. H. Wotidard, Geo. Barnes. W. E. McMarshall, and H. Samuels contributed vocal solos, and Bros. Maxwell Walker and Howard Andrews supplied elocutionary items. it was announced that this year’s session would close with the next meeting on September 27, when the club’s president. Bro. R. G.
