Laughing Prince Wins His Fourth Eclipse Stakes

Heavy Totalisator Drop at Wanganui Special to THE SUN

WANGANUI, Saturday*. After fairly heavy rain last night and this morning, the weather cleared for the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, there being a perfect spring day. The track was in splendid order and the going very fast. The totalisator showed a decrease again, being £5,098 down oil the day, the aggregate for the meeting, £30.703 10s, showing a drop of £10,070 10s, compared with last year’s total. The attendance was better than the I opening day, though not up to • last year’s. The first day’s gate showed a decline of £4O. while todays was more than that behind. Badly-Ridden Favourito Principal interest was displayed in the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes, which was voted a good thing for Toxeuma. Blit the Arrowsmith gelding was not handled to the best advantage by Ellis, and the result was that Laughing Prince, well ridden by L. G. Morris, snatched victory by the narrowest of margins. This marked Laughing Prince’s fourth victory in succession in this event, and his return to weigh-in was the signal for an ovation. Better handled. Toxeuma could not have lost, however. Lady Pam surprised some by her forward running and is worth keeping in mind. Won at Last Courageous did a good turn for backers of the Kemball bracket who pinned their faith to llynanna, with Gray up. After trailing the field for the greater part of the journey, Courageous put in a great run on the outside and sustained it to the post. Mendip ran a good race, but was not quite good enough. Marjoram also went well, and Yoma ran another good race. Rub - nui was very badly away and did well to finish six;th. The time for the mile and a-quarter was a race record. Staghunter. who won the Owen Handicap, showed just what a sprinter of liis class can do when in the mood. Acora displayed her usual speed, but the winner’s brilliant burst was Loo much for her. Fernden did not have the best of luck ir. the running, but was decisively beaten. A Smart Youngster The Debutante Stakes introduced the first juvenile winner of the season in Korokio, a full sister to Fernden. She proved herself as brilliant as her parade and track form had promised. King Colossus impressed as one likely to improve, while La Poupee also showed it lot of speed in her finishing effort. Curie will do better next time out.. Arisus won the Trial Handicap on his merits, and impressed a_s one of the best of Thespian’s gets to race. Vandyke, runner-up, gave his usual display of bad manners at the barrier. Paratoo nearly brought off a mild surprise. These three-year-oids, together with Imamint, appear likely to do well during the season. Jolincen. bracketed with Imateagirl in the Moutoa Hack Handicap, paid the best price of the day, the dividend being a good double-figure one. Debutante Stakes Backers declared strongly for Korokio in the Debutante Stakes, the Redfern filly carrying £559. Curie. £278, La Poupee, £lsl, and King Colossus £l4B. Invite and Flower did not get. away wjien the barrier went up. Chief Clerk, King Colossus and Korokio jumped into their stride at once, the favourito taking the lead before they had gone far. She was followed by King Colossus, Chief Clerk, Ecila. Sailing and Curie across the top, while into the straight Korokio was well clear of King Colossus, Sailing, EJcila and Chief Clerk. La Poupee finished fast from a long way back, but Korokio came on to win with ease by a length from King Colossus, who was a simij lar distance ahead of La Poupee. Four lengths back was Curie, and Chief Clerk, Ecila, Hampden, Cape Gold and Sailing were next to finish. Gonville Hurdles j Luminary was installed favourite for the Gonville Hurdles, carrying £5lB, | and Make Up £398 and Royal Acre

£350 were also well supported. Make Up arid Opa were first out, followed by Luminary, Avro and Royal Acre, but up the straight the first time Luminary was well clear of Opa, Royal Acre, Make Up, Nukumai and Avro. The favourite turned into the back stretch a couple of lengths clear of Opa, Royal Acre, Nukumai, Make Up and Avro. Royal Acre*had run UP to him at the hurdle by the live-fur-long peg, and Royal Acre showed the way across the top ahead of Luminary. Nukumai and Make Up, but Luminary had again taken a lead entering the straight and cleared the last, fence just ahead of Royal Acre. In the run to the judge Luminary held his own to win comfortably by three lengths from Koval Acre, who just hold off the fast-finishing Avro by a. head. Nukumai was fourth and Make Up and Opa followed. Spring Hack In a big field that contested the Spring Hack Handicap, Pomp was elecetd favourite, carrying £755. Autopay £639, Brilliant Light £260 and Zarene £255 being next in request. The start was not of the best for some of the 17 contestants. Baskier. Arrowzone, Huntingdon, Tar Baby. Taranto and Autopay were smartest out from the tapes, while Pomp was badly awpy. The favourite was going great guns on the outside running past the four furlongs and a little farther on Huntingdon, Autopay, Tar Baby, Taranto, Baskier, Arrowzone, Zarene and Pomp were racing in fairly close order. On the turn for home Huntingdon was just in front of Autopay and Baskier. with Taranto and Pomp next and Zarene showing up. Once in line for the judge the leaders spread across the course and staged a great finish. Autopay, Zarene and Huntingdon flashing over the line with half-heads separating them in that order, while half a length back Pass On, Baskier and Brilliant Light were together, ahead of Pomp, Tar Baby, Arrowzone. and Taranto. Eclipse Stakes Toxeuma £1,159 was a warm favourito for the Eclipse Stakes, nearly twice as well backed as Laughing Prince C 699, Lady Pam carrying £154. Lady ! Pam was slow away. Laughing j Prince and Toxeuma ran for the back t stretch together, and passing the six | furlongs Toxeuma was bowling along ;in front of Laughing Prince and Simba, Vertigern being last. At the three furlongs Simba was alongside Toxeuma, with Laughing Prince (on the rails) and Lady Pam next. Laughing Prince got clear and tackled the favourite at the distance, worrying him out of the prize by a nose. Two lengths away was Lady Pam, with a gap back to Vertigern. Trial Handicap

Most money came for Imamint £661 in the Trial Handicap, with strong support for Arisus £487 and Vandyke £452. Backers were not far out. Vandyke was again responsible for a lengthy delay at the post, and when the barrier went up Imamint, Arisus. Laconic, Pandia, Vandyke, Little Wonder and Paratoo showed out. Arisus soon took the lead and piloted Ganpat, Imamint. Vandyke. Laconic, Pandia and Lady Spear past the four furlongs. Arisus was still clear on the turn, where Ganpat, Jayson, Imamint, Vandyke, Monaloff and Paratoo were also in the picture, the last three named being wide out. In an interesting finish Arisus held on to win nicely by a length from Vandyke, who was two lengths in front of Paratoo. Acmil and Imamint were close up to the placed horses, and then came Laconic. Jayson, Cluny, Little Wonder and Pandia, Higgie Handicap Mendip was favourite for the Higgie Handicap, with £ 805, the Hynanna— Courageous bracket being also well backed with £503. Duellona, Mendip, Marjoram and Royal Game were the first to make their appearance in the straight. Past the stand the order was Marjoram, Mendip. Duellona, Royal Game (all together). Tourist, My Own. Hmanna, Black Mint, Yoma and Pahu. Tourist streaked to the front at the six furlongs, where he was clear of Royal (lame. Marjoram, Mendip. Hynanna. Duellona and My Own. It was a furlong further on that Courageous commenced his run. He kept it up across the top, with the order of the others little changed. Entering the straight. Tourist was still in front of Marjoram, Mendip, Courageous, Royal Game and Hynanna, but once they straightened up Courageous came on to win nicely by three-quarters of a length from Mendip. Marjoram was two and a-half lengths back third, and Yoma, Hynanna, Ruanui. My Own, Tourist and Duelonna was the order of the others. Moutoa Hack Shortly, £526. and Grand Jury, £438, were the favourites for the Moutoa Hack Handicap, but an outsider in Johneen (bracketed with Imateagirl) upset the “pot” and returned his supporters a double-figure dividend. Grand Jury and Johneen were in the van as they raced out of the straight, with Imateagirl, Mount Shannon and Shortly next in order. Johneen was the pilot into the back stretch, where Mount Shannon. Imateagirl, Shortly, Grand Jury. Spearopa and Kahikatoa, was the order. Johneen showed the way to Mount Shannon, Imateagirl. Shortly Kind Grand Jury past the three furlongs, and the order was practically tho same into the straight, with Grand Jury hemmed in on the rails. In line for the judge, Shortly challenged, but failed.' by a neck to catch the outsider, while Grand Jury was a length away third. Kahikatoa was three lengths back fourth, -while Spearopa, Pedestal, Mount Shannon and Calamine were next. Owen Handicap In the biggest pool of the meeting, for the Owen Handicap, Arrow Lad, carried more than Freehold, £725, and Acora, £527. Staghunter. carrying £3OO, confounded keen followers of form by winning fairly easily. Freehold and Fernden showed out first from Arrow Lad, with Acora making a run on the outside. Acora was alongside Freehold three furlongs from home, the order of the -others being Arrow Lad, Fernden, Te Atiawa, Lim°sln and Staghunter. The last-named was still tailing the field on the turn for home, Acora being first into the straight from Te Atiawa, Freehold, Fernden and Arrow Lad. At the distance Acora looked a winner, but then Staghunter finished fast and won going away by a length, Acora just holding oil To Atiawa by a short head for second money.
