STROMBOLI VOMITING STREAMS OF HOT LAVA

FIVE PERSONS KILLED RELIEF SHIPS SENT United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 11.35 a.m. ROME, Friday. There was a startling and tremendous explosion yesterday from the crater of the volcano Stromboli, which broke out into extraordinary activity. Showers of flaming stones and molten matter were erupted and these started lires throughout the island. This is Stromboli’s worst eruption since 1907. Five persons are dead and 15 seriously injured. Two victims perished in a river of burning sand and the body' of another disappeared in the lava. A destroyer and two torpedo boats have been dispatched from Messina to the relief of the islanders. A report that the entire cone of the mountain was blown off is denied. Stromboli is situated on the island of that name in the Lipari group in the Mediterranean, from 15 to 30 miles from the north coast of Sicily and comprised in the Province of Messina. The ancient crater occupies the centre of the island and the existing active crater, more to the north, constantly emits flames, or rather illuminated vapour but no lava.
