A ROUGH OPENING FOR COWES REGATTA.—Although Cowes is always apt to be hampered by over-light winds, this year, on the contrary, proceedings opened with half a gale and heavy squalls. Conditions were so bad when the annual race for the big boats commenced that only two. Candida and Westward, started, and both split their mainsails. This fine picture shows Mr. C. Nicholson at the wheel of Mr. Andreal's Candida, during the boat's thrilling battle with wind and weather.
