BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR BIBLE CLASS LEADER

OTAHUHU METHODISTS Tho Methodist Memorial Hall. Otahuhu. was prettily decorated with streamers in shades of royal blue and maroon on Monday evening, on the occasion of a birthday party organised by Mrs. Highfield and the members of tho Young Women’s and Young Men’s Bible Classes, in honour of the seventieth birthday of Mr. T. Highfield, who has filled the office of leader of the men’s Bible class for pkst years. There were a number of i friends present from neighbouring districts. A very pleasant evening was spent in community games and musical items, the latter contributed by Miss Jean Hunter. Air. G. W. Venables. Mr. Harvey, Mr. Wakelin. and Air. If. Andrew. During the evening Mr. K Handisides. u member of the iron'd class, in a short speech, extended congratulations on behalf of the combined classes to their guest, on his attaining his seventieth birthday, and trusted that ho would be spared for many more years. On behalf ot the two cias.-es. he presented Mr. Highfield with a fountain pen. and pencil, and a book, inscribed by the members. Mrs. Highfield received a pretty posy of violets from Miss B. Cowper. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES PROVINCIAL MEETINGS The usual monthly meeting of the Albany Women’s Institute took place on Wednesday, September 3, when Mrs. B. Dickson presided. After much business was disposed of some interesting letters were read from Aliss Potter, who is travelling abroad. Airs. Victor Alacky gave a delightful address on the “The Psychology of the Nursery Rhymes,” which was much enjoyed by the members. Afternoon tea, which was served by Mesdames Schofield, Powell and Aliss Cowley, concluded a pleasant afternoon. LECTURE ON DIET AND HEALTH There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Te Whetu Women’s Institute, at which Mrs. Dobson presided. A very interesting and instructive lecture on “Diet and Health," sent by Airs. Wettenhall, was read by Airs. P, Alcock. Airs. Lake, who is leaving the dis- i trict, was presented with a bronze ; cake stand in honour of being the first president of Te Whetu, also for the help she had given during her term of office. A competition of raffia-covered jars brought forth some very artistic results. Afternoon tea was served by Alesdames Farrell and W. Jensen. TE HOE INSTITUTE A demonstration of the making of waxed flowers was given by Airs. Barker at a meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute. Airs. Cuff presided over a good attendance of members. Afternoon tea was served later by the hostesses. FIRST MEETING AT TURUA The first monthly meeting of the Turua Women’s Institute was held in the Turua Hall. Airs. Trevlyn Aliller presided. Alesdames J. H. Johnston, J. T. Davies and W. Al. Dando were elected vice-presidents. It was decided to send a delegate to the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes. Afternoon tea closed a very enjoyable afternoon. The hostesses were the women of the committee. TUAKAU BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Tuakau Women’s Institute was held in the Town Hall on Friday, when Mrs. Lewis presided over a good attendance. Airs. A. J. Prescott gave a demonstration on papier mache work, which created much interest, and Airs. H. Steer's talk on Rudyard Kipling was much appreciated. The hostesses were Airs. E. Addy and Airs. G. Asher. AIRS. IRWIN VISITS PUKEKOHE At a meeting of the Pukekohe Women’s Institute Airs. Irwin, of Greenhithe, spoke of the institute and its work and later in the evening gave ! an interesting address on “The In- j timate Life of Napoleon.” Mrs. Lawson gave a demonstration I of and some hints upon cake icing and , decorating, and Aliss Whitten's contri- J bution of two songs was greatly ap- j preciated. TAUPIRI BRANCH At the meeting of the Taupiri Women’s Institute on Wednesday afternoon there was present the largest attendance since the institute was commenced about six months ago. The president, Aliss Roskruge, presided. Flower bulbs and seedlings were brought and sold. Mrs. Alan. Scott gave a pianoforte solo and Airs. Voilemaere sang two solos, accompanied by Miss Pearl Charles. An exhibition of art treasures was greatly admired. Community singing brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close. The hostesses for the afternoon were Alesdames E. P. Tapper, Vollemaere, R. Hunter and F. C. Day. AIEETING AT PORT ALBERT At the monthly meeting of the Port Albert Women’s Institute the resolutions for the provincial federation’s annual council meeting to be held this month wero the main business for discussion. Tho social half-hour was spent in community singing. The hostesses were Airs. W. P. Legge and 'Miss Glasper. “BRING AND, BUY" AFTERNOON AT OTAKIRI The Otakiri Women's Institute met in tho local hall recently, when Airs. Keir presided over a good attendance of members. The remits for the provincial conference were discussed and Airs. Smalley gave an interesting demonstration of tatting. The “bring and buy’* stall proved very profitable. The hostesses wero Mrs. Hampton and Aliss Giboney. TE ATATU BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Te Atatu Women’s Institute was held recently. Airs. Chadwick presided. Remits to be dealt with at the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federated Women’s Institute, to be held in September, were discussed. Airs. Clark, of Mount Eden, gave a helpful talk on “Optimism,” and during the afternoon songs and duets were sung by Aliss Alather and Aliss Brooks. The hostesses were Mrs. Pijaeum and Aliss Chi tty. AIATAKANA INSTITUTE Airs. Alelville presided at a meeting of the Alatakana Women’s Institute. It was decided to send a delegate to the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes.
