THE CHURCH AND DISTRESS The monthly meeting of the Baptist Assembly was presided over by the Rev. A. J. Grigg, M.A. Various reports from the churches were received. Concerning the work ot the social service committee the following resolution was unanimously passed:—“That in view of the present distress the churches be urged to augment their efforts to give relief and that each church be requested to report upon its methods to the social service committee. In the meantime the committee be asked to formulate plans for concerted action.” The committee expressed the following resolution in connection with the resignation of the Rev. A. W. Bean: “That this assembly regrets the departure of the Rev. A. W. Bean who, for two and a-half years, has so faithfully and efficiently served the church at Epsom.” Appreciation was also expressed of his ministry, which had been conducted with spiritual force, earnestness and culture.

It was decided to forward a copy of this resolution to the Baptist Union with which Mr. Bean will associate himself on his return to Australia. It was unanimously agreed to send hearty wishes for a good and successful conference shortly to be held by the New Zealand Alliance and that tho temperance committee be authorised to appoint two of its members to represent the Auxiliary at the council meetings of the alliance.
