A remarkable achievement has been made by a girl named Ruth .Shields, a, pupil of the Rauatetl School, in the Ohura County, in connection t\ ith the work of the Ohura Girls’ and Boys' Agricultural Clubs. Miss Shields secured the championship award in the cropping competition, and thus won the gold medal presented by Mr. J. Roche. Mr. Ridling, formerly Agricultural Instructor for the Department, who was present at the club's annual meeting. stated that the winner’s yield of sweeds was at the rate of 62f tons to the acre, and no other plot, including those at Seward in Taranaki, had yielded such a heavy crop. The care and cultivation of her plot was splendid. Mr. N. J. B. Dougherty was reelected the clubs’ president, and Mr. D. Mackay, secretary. The vacancy on the executive caused by Mr. Longley’s removal from the district has been filled by the election of Mr. <\ R. J. Julian. This year’s competitions will comprise lamb rearing, calf rearing and cropping. The latter will take the form of a variety trial in either mangolds or swedes, for which the Department will be asked to supply seeds and manures.
