PAPAKURA BUSINESSMEN

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The monthly meeting- of the Papakura Chamber of Commerce mas held last evening, Mr. IL E. McEntee presiding. A letter was received from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce asking the local chamber to use its influence to persuade the Franklin County Council to accept the Highways Board’s offer for the concreting of its portion of the Great South Road. It was decided to reply that they intended to support the Franklin County Council in its present action for a lar &er subsidy. Tho local postmaster advised the chamber that their request for an additional mail had been granted, and that the new mail would close at 3 1.30 a.m. and would reach Auckland in time for the afternoon delivery. It was decided to send to all chambers in New Zealand and to the Auckland Automobile Association a suggestion that they urge upon the Government the necessity for a drastic alteration in the constitution of the Alain Highways Board, in order to give effect to the principle that there be no taxation without adequate representation. It was considered that the Alain Highways Boa,rd should consist of the representative of the Public Works Department, two representatives of the motor associations (one from each island), two representatives of the country councils, one representative of the municipalities one representative of commercial motor vehicle users, making seven members in all.

A protest is to bo sent to the ActingPrime Minister against the extra charge of 30s being made by the Associated Banks for keeping customers’ accounts, and urging the Government to have the extra charge withdrawn. Tho question of a district high school for Papakura . was again revived, and it was decided to send a request to the Minister of Education for further consideration of Papakura’s needs in this direction.
