Hannibal Does Striking Trial

CATOMA’S GOOD SPRINT TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE The Avondale Cup candidate, Hannibal, was a brilliant worker at Ellerslie this morning, when Great Emblem, Sir Mond, Catoma and Sub-Editor also performed well. Xo 3 grass track was available for all fast work, and though rain set in just prior to the opening trials the going continued good: in fact fast for all training during the morning. After travelling sn oothly and quickly in tlio early stages, Royal Mena wound up half a mile in 53, Informant immediately following over the same distance to record 53 4-5. Kamehameha did not have much pace on for the com-, mencement of a round, but over the last six he swung along nicely to make 1.23 1-5. He was a big disappointment in pjumping events during the winter, but ho is not yet too old to redeem himself. Eager Rose was not extended to run a round in 1.47 2-5, and she ran under a free rein at the post. The mare covered the last seven furlongs in 1.37 ! 3-5. Xew Boy’s six furlongs took 1.25. I but it was merely a working gallop as he could have done a lot better. Cynj thia X. and Lasoma, too, separately did useful pneo work over seven furlongs. Sir Mond was brought across from Takapuna and was at Ellerslie this morning lor a rousing gallop. He was , accompanied by Great Emblem, who indeed shaped very impressively over ; tho five-furlong journey. They carried j out the initial furlong in 13, and two took 25, coming home at a fast clip to register smart figures—l.s- 3-5. The > honours went to Great Emblem, who ; beat Sir Mond by three parts of a i length, and one could not help but be i impressed with the manner in which he has improved. He is still a maiden and this class at Avondale should see him racing prominently. Sir Mond. a J very robust type at any time, still I looks a bit burly. Best of the Morning Hannibal is in line order for his Avondale Cup engagement as he revealed in a striking gallop over a round, registering the excellent time of 1.41 3-5. Joined by The Fox at the five furlongs he made 3.6 3-5 for that distance, and the final six furlongs were disposed of in 1.20. The big son j of Catmint held his companion at the ' end, and was running on really well. The three-year-old Art Gallery was j doing comfortably at the end of three ! furlongs in 42 1-5, and for two furlongs i farther Gold Money bowled along freely ; to record 1.7. She left the initial two • behind in 25 4-5. Ruling King strode over six furlongs without any exertion in 1.21 2-5, the first half of the journey in 39. The three-year-old is being kept up to the collar and should be showing returning form again. Grand Spirit was paired with Stimulant for an effort over six furlongs, but the latter, although not having a great

advantage at the end. was doing his work with greater freedom. They kept together over the first in 12 3-5. and after covering three furlongs in 3S 3-5 ran to the post in 1.22 1-5. Showery weather was experienced for the work after the breakfast interval. Catoma conceded* Sub-Editor a length and a-half when they jumped off from the six furlongs’ oust, but made to do it all the way Catoma was only a neck away at the end. Catoma’s time was 1.19 1-5 (his first three in 38 1-5), and Sub-Editor took 1.20. Kawainga and a companion executed a six furlongs’ task easily in 1.22 2-5, and CurTajong went over the same ground in 1.29 2-5. Spring Song taking 1.33 4-5. Llanore, Frothblower and Karangapai were in company for a round in 1.49 4-5. the first-named revelling in the conditions to beat his companions by eight lengths. Red Lion. Principal and Patutahi finished at intervals over six furlongs in 1.24, Waltzer’s last six furlongs of a round taking 1.26 4-5. Gay Idead’s half-mile 58. and Gay Cockade’s six furlongs, 1.26 3-5.
