Veilmond Headed For A.J.C. Derby

BRILLIANT THREE-YEAR-OLD SUPERIORITY PROVED A brilliant finishing effort in the i Hobartvillo Stakes, at Warwick Farm (Sydney) on August 39, caried Veilmond to victory in that race, and to short-priced favouritism for the A..7.C. Derby. It was the performance of a , prospective classic winner, for he came from behind five horses in the last furlong and a half, and, battling against the head wind, was being eased up right on the post. The run placed beyond all doubt the identity of Sydney’s best three-year- : old (comments a Sydney writer)! and unless The Doctor’s Orders develops i into a really outstanding galloper. Veilmond apparently has little to fear from anything in the Derby. Good Odds Obtained The belief that he might ne**d a run induced fielders into taking a slight risk with Veilmond at the opening of betting, and nice odds were freely offered. It. was maintained that. Veilmond’s owner, Mr. E. Moss, did not bet with his usual confidence, but the many huge wagers taken about the colt suggests that a substantial sum was landed over the win. The value of Veilmond’s effort was increased by his display of pace as well as stamina. From the very outside. he quickly shot into the leading I bunch, and, rounding the six furlongs j turn, he was behind only Chemosh and , Frontier. \ eilmond easily held his place to the three furlongs post, where. • however, Barrucootboo and Bavacro | moved up fast on the outside, and the j favourite droppepd back to sixth place. Missed the Run It was a critical time for Veilmond. The chance of serious interference was apparent, and McCarten pulled him in toward the rails in the hope of gaining an inside passage at the home turn. But Balloon King, who was alongside him. had sufficient pace to beat him for the only opening, and while Chemosh and Frontier were making for home. McCarten was picking his way to the outside to gain a clear run. A furlong from home Chemosh. Frontier, and Bayacre were practically in line. The latter was doing a trifle the best of the trio, but as soon as Webster shot him to the front. McCarten brought Veilmond along on the outside, and quickly settled the Issue. A True Stayer , Veilmond got down to his task in j the .style of a true stayer, and finding him running right away. McCarten ’eased him on the post. Both Bayacre ! and Chemosh battled on well, but their | efforts did not suggest Derby chances. Chemosh did better than at Rosehill, land under more favourable conditions j would have been closer to Veilmond. | But the head wind in the straight was j not to his advantage, and he was i beaten a furlong from home. Only Moderate Balloon King shaped very moderately. Pike did not bustle him in the early stages, and when the colt shot through into fourth place at the bend he looked a possibility. His run ended almost as soon as it commenced, and he dropped back to seventh at the finish. Frontier was fourth, and will prove a really good sprinter later in the season, and Delwood, just behind him, ran j on well enough to raise hopes of minor { three-year-old success, i But if the Hobartville Stakes running was a true indication of respective ability, Veilmond had little to fear I from any youngsters who finished behind him. He will improve just as j much, if not more, than his rivals, and his owner, Mr. Moss, possesses better chances of realising his great ambition, a Derby success, than ever he has. Veilmond, trained by George Price, is by Limond from the Absurd mare Veil (a sister to Rational and The Monk), and he has already proved himself a cheap horse at the 575 guineas paid for him as a yearling at the Trentham sales 18 months ago.
