TAKANINI NOTES

REFRESHER DOING WELL Special to THE SUX TAKANINI, Today. Valorient, who has been off the scene for some time, is shortly to be placed in work. The Valkyrian— Cuiriagnes gelding was a disappointment last year, but may be found redeeming past failures when the season is in full swing. Trustee, by General Latour—Newlant. after contesting a couple of maiden races at the Whangarei Racing Club's autumn meeting, went amiss, having ricked, himself while working on the track. He was off the scene quite a while, but W. Goscomb has him on four legs again, and he is beginning to look in more like racing condition. Disappointment Little Gift won at the Poverty Bay meeting six months ago, but since then has proved a complete disappointment on the flat. Her connections are now giving her a chance to make good over the battens, and if jumping ability is any criterion, they should not have a great deal of trouble in placing her to advantage. It is pleasing to note that Hare Words is shaping a little better in Australia, and now that the brilliant son of Diacquenod and Mazabuka has struck form, a race or two will not be beyond him before his return to New L Zealand. Refresher was more than userul last season, and although he has not been in commission very long since spelling, he has made great headway, and it will not be many weeks before the Tea Tray—Hula Girl gelding will be again seen sporting the colours of owner Mr. Geo. Glenn. Shine On, another of W. Goscomb’s team to receive schooling lessons, has not made the progress expected, and that, together with the fact that she is built on small lines, does not make the outlook appear very bright. Track watchers are very impressed with the condition of Envoy. This little son of Absurd—Bronze is looking better now than at any time he has been in work here. Usually lightframed, he has muscled up and is carrying a much '“brighter appearance. H. Goldfinch will be on Roseric and Rosshire in all engagements at Avondale, while E. Ludlow will be on the Royal Artist and P. Mcllroy on St. Ames. D. G. Farrell will ride King’s Speech, Royal Survey and Gay Cavalier. Nothing strenuous has been asked of Havaspot since being recommissioned, but the work allotted him has been undertaken in a kindly manner. The well-named Tippler gelding lost his early form at the latter part of last season, but will attack the new season’s engagements with renewed vigour after enjoying a respite. Mashoor likes a journey, and was consequently not entered for the hurdles -at Avondale next week. The Lucullus gelding on recent form will prove a source of annoyance to the opposition to be met with in steeplechases and it would be quite on the cards to find him among the placegetters in the Waikato Hunt Cup at Cambridge next month. He is working along very nicely in pace work I tasks, and looks very well. | Bugle Call, by Hunting Song—St. Helen, for whom owner Mr. Wenzl Scholium paid 400 guineas in Gisborne last year, is shaping very well and is heading the right way to being on the scene in a few months. He was one of the latest youngsters to be on the scene at the track, so it would be too much to expect to see him race before, the Ellerslie spring meeting.

The Day Comet—Lady Frisco mare, Sister White, is apparently going to be out some time. The writer saw her in the paddock this week and the tendon which she cut while schooling is still very tender. It will be at least six months before she is again in action.

Topstar will be worth watching after a pipe-opener or two this season. His condition is all that can be desired and he is hitting out with plenty of dash in his work-outs. The Valkyrian—Podokes juvenile is fairly forward and ,J. T. Jamieson’s charge is doing very nicely under the guidance of R. Miller. Polyxena’s half-brother looks the part and is bred on the right lines to possess speed.

Pateena looks very racy and is carrying a very bright appearance after her Tasman trip with the Jamieson team.
