AN EASIER TENDENCY

N.Z. STOCK MARKETS WESTFIELD REVIEWED By R.W.C. A slightly easier tone was recorded in the principal stock selling centres of the Dominion yesterday. Heavier yardings were the order of the day. At Westfield, the ox beef entry, numbering just on 250 head, contained some of the best quality of tho winter. There was evidence in practically every instance that the vendors had gone to a little trouble to get the cattle up to a condition which would qualify them for prime stock grade. A number of lines were starting to lose their winter coats, and this gave them increased bloom, adding to their attractiveness. The Waikato was again tho principal contributor. The North has sent very littlo forward to Westfield in recent months. A line of 40 station uuliocks came forward from the GisDorne district to meet with a ready sale; these cattle were not exceptionally weil finished, but they were good buying for butchers' purposes and averaged a shade under £l4. Tho market lor heavy prime catt.e was a litL.e easier than last week, but nandy weight sorts showed little change. Cows and heifers were also a little easier, especially toward the closq, but extra well-finished sorts made up to last week’s top quotations. Extra prime steers made to 42s a hundred; best young cows and heifers made to 40s a hundred. Show steers made up to £22; heavy prime steers made from £ls 10s to £lB 10s; medium, £l2 10s to £ls; light and small, from £lO. Choicest young cows and heifers made to £l4 17s 6d; heavy prime, £lO to £l2 10s; medium, £ 8 to £9 15s; light and small, from £6; unfinished, from £4. Calf Market Easier Tho market for anything but the best handy-weight sorts of calves was a little easier. Top price in the section was secured for an extra choice prime heifer, which sold for £9 15s; extra choice prime vealers made to £5 10s; heavy vealers generally made from £3 10s to £5; medium, from £2 ss; well-nourished fresh-dropped to four-weeks-old calves made from 15s to 355; exporters for the bobby veai trade paid from 5s to 13s. The entry of fat sheep was one of the heaviest of the season, six full rows coming forward, compared with an average of under five in recent weeks. Although there was still a small percentage of choice prime butchers’ ewes and wethers, the biggest part of the entry was made up of indifferently finished soi'ts, a big portion of which were hoggets. Prices were a shade easier, especially toward the close. Extra prime wethers made to 32s 9d; heavy prime, 28s 6d to 31s 6d;
