Winner Disqualified at Wanganui Races

WEIGHED IN SHORT OUTSIDER WINS PUTIKI Special to TJIE SUN WANGANUI, Today. There was glorious spring weather for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The track was in excellent order and the attendance was large. Results: MAIDEN PLATE Of £175; 6 furlongs 1— VANDYKE. 7.12 1 2 .JAYSON, 7.12 2 4 BASKIBR, 8.0 3 S<-r.: Thunderstorm, Takahue, Souchong. Arvada, Danny Boy. Won by two lengths, with a head between second and third. Time, 1.14 4-5. With 23 of the 28 acceptors going to the post in the Maiden Race, a two-division contest was avoided. Vandyke, £296, was favourite from Jayson £196. and Tar Baby £*9 52. The favourite proved fractious at the barrier, but he eventually got away well from an outside position.. Huskier, Jayson, Biflex, Acco and Pandia wore in the van bunched closer in to the rails soon after the start. Huskier showed the way to Hinewai, Jayson, Vandyke, Biflex, Acco, Pandia and Tar Baby across the top, and they turned into the straight, in practically the same order. However, in the run to the judge the favourite overhauled Huskier inside the distance to win nicely by two lengths, while in the last couple of strides Jayson got up to take second money by a head from Huskier. Laconic finished well to fill fourth place, ahead of Hinewai. Tar Baby, Hi flex and Acco. OKEHU HURDLES Of £225; 1J miles A AVRO, 10.8 1 7—ROYAL, ACRE, 10.2 2 3 MAKE UP, 10.0 3 Scr: Disrank, Shining Armour. Won by a head, with two lengths between second and third. Time, 3.15 3,-5. Mister Gamp was first past the post but was disqualified and the race given to the second horse, Avro. Disrank and Panorama were the defections from the Okehu Hurdles, in which Make Up £407, was preferred to Luminary £389, and Nukumai £3lB. But backers of Luminary were fated to enjoy a brief run for their money, the Northerner unshipping his pilot at the initial fence. Make Up and Royal Acre were the pacemakers from Avro in the early stages after Luminary went out, and the trio maintained their positions practically throughout, although entering on the second circuit Mister Gamp came up to hurry the leaders along. Crossing the top Make Up and Royal Aero were still contesting the issue, with Avro handy and Mister Gamp further back, the gap between the leaders and the Awapuni representative promising to be too great to bridge three furlongs from home. Avro ran up to the leaders at the final fence, but when looking all over a winner Mister Gamp secured a run on the rails and the Bronzetti gelding came through with a great burst to beat Avro home by a head, with Royal Acre two lengths back, just ahead of Make Up. Nukumai was fifth. However, a bombshell was to follow, when jockey Hobson, rider of Mister Gamp, weighed in 31b short, and the race was awarded to Avro. PUTIKI HACK Of £200; 1 mile 110 yards. 10— JOYSPEAR, 8.3 1 5 SHORTLY. B.K .. 2 11— GRAND JURY', 7.12 3 Scr.: Mount Shannon, Tmateagirl, Auctioneer. Won by three-quarters of a length with a head between second and third. Time, 1.49 1-5. Of the 14 runners in the Putiki Hack Handicap The Warden (£415), Spearopa (£333) and the bracketed pair, Adventus and Great Lady (£260), were in the strongest demand. Joyspear from No. 1 position at the barrier, began smartly to secure the running on the rails from Kahikatoa, with Annoyer, The Warden, Calamart and Pedestal their nearest attendants. Pedestal made a fast run along the back to attend Joyspear and Kahikatoa as they raced past the five furlongs post with Calamart. The Warden, Shortly and Grand Jury next. Johneen. Grand Jury and Kilorell improved their positions crossing the top, and a great race ensued. In the straight Joyspear had sufficient in reserve to hold off a late challenger to win by three-quarters of a length from Shortly, with Grand Jury ahead away. Little Wonder. Kilorell and Kahikatoa were in line with Grand Jury and Calamart and Spearopa were next.
