WAITED FOR DEATH
BALLOONISTS’ HARDSHIPS ON ARCTIC QUEST RECORDS IN DIARY Reed. Noon. STOCKHOLM, Wed. A message from the whaler Isbjoern says the diary of Dr. Strindberg, of Andree’s Polar exploration party, reveals a tragic story of disappointed hopes and the heroic facing of death. It discloses that the balloon landed on a huge iceberg on July 14, 1897, after three days’ flight. The march southward began on July 22 and the party discovered White Island on September 17. They celebrated a banquet in a snow house built on the glacier, but part of this broke off and they drifted to sea on October 2. The party regained the island on October 5 and next day they were overwhelmed by a snowstorm. Entries after that date reveal the advancing weakness of the members, but no word of despair was displayed until they ceased on October 17.
