N.Z. ATHLETES COMPETE AT TORONTO

SAVIDAN RUNS SECOND TORONTO, Saturday. At an athletic meeting at the Canadian National Exhibition today, in the 3 2 miles modified marathon race, Arnold Webster (Hamilton) was first and J. W. Savidan second. The New Zealander led for most of the way, going in front at four miles. Webster came up from behind in the last half-mile, to beat Savidan by 50 yards. Time, lh 9m 32 3-ss. The New South Wales marathon championship of 26 miles 385 yards was run yesterday. It resulted: H. Hayden (Botanv Harriers), 1 : A. G. Williams (Botany Harriers), 2; V. Sly (Manly Athletic Club), 3. Hayden made extraordinarily fast time. An investigation disclosed the fact that he had not traversed the course as laid down over the last quarter. He was found drinking a glass of wine and on being apprised of the position swallowed the drink and set out to follow the correct course. A Soccer match between representative teams from the North and South Island Primary Schools’ Association took place at Wellington yesterday. The northern team won by 3 goals' to 2. The game was arranged as a measure of compensation to the primary schoolboys .for their disappointment over the failure of the projected trip to Australia. The game was a good one and was watched by a large crowd. The president of the New Zealand Football Association, Sir Charles Statham, was present. Prior to the game the boys of both teams were presented with representative caps by the chairman of the council, Mr. F. Campbell. PIGEON FLYING ONEHUNGA CLUB’S RACE The first race of the 1930 old bird season was flown from National Park on Saturday by the Onehunga Pigeon Flying Club. Liberated in dqll weather, the winning bird flew the distance of 100 miles in the smart time of 3 hours 20 minutes, averaging 48 miles an hour. Results: Mr. T. Collins’s Wing Forward, 1,404 yards a minute, 1; Mr. W. Hadwin’s Bonny Boy, 1,403 yards a minute, 2; Mr. B. D. Smith’s Conqueror, 1,398 yards a minute, 3; Mr. YV.
