MRS. S. BLOMFIELD

The death has occurred at Birkenhead of Mrs. Emma-Etta Watts Blomfield, widow of the late Mr. Samuel Blomfield. Born in Leicester 90 years ago, Mrs. Blomfield was married in London in 1808. Five years later she and her husband came to New Zealand, accompanied by Mrs. Blomfield. sen., and her seven children, one of whom, the late Mr. Charles Blomfield, became a well-known artist. His pictures of the pink and white terraces are now in the Auckland Art Gallery. Mr. Samuel Blomfield. who had been a joiner and stair-builder in the Old Country, continued his trade in Xew Zealand. He suffered from deafness, S£ L W no active service in the Maori \Var, but did duty in the Albert Barracks. In 186 i, the vear of the gold discovery, Mr. Blomfield left with his wife and family for Thames, where they lived in a hut built with cases, and a tent. Mr. Blomfield did not do much mining, but later he constructed many of the principal buildings at Thames. He and his wife returned in 1880 to Auckland, where he died some years ago.
