DEVONPORT BRIGADE
PLEA FOR FIRE DISTRICT A plea for the setting up of a fire district in Devon port was made by Mr. A. Harris, M.P., responding to the toast of “The Visitors” at the annual smoke concert of the Devonport Municipal Volunteer Fire Brigade, on Saturday evening. The insurance companies, he said, would then have to contribute. Air. A. E. Greenslade. Mavor of Northcote, who spoke subsequently’, remarked that the North Shore had so far relied on volunteer firemen and had not been let down. Air. J. Ilislop, deputy-mayor of Devonport, was in the chair, and presented three-year and five-year certificates to the hon. surgeons of the brigade. Dr. J. Eade and Dr. T. de Clive-Lowe, and bar to Dr. Bennett, who has been connected with the brigade for 23 years. Superintendent 11. E. Follas and his deputy, Air. Stevens, who both have been 21 years in the service of fire fighting, received their 21year bars. Bars were also bestowed on Foreman Whitley. 15 y'ears’ service: Secretary Crabb. 13 years: Fireman Cooper, 3 years: Fireman Laing. 7 years. Certificates for three y’ears' service were awarded to Firemen J. O’Brien and R. Fletcher. Air. L. Cus worth, who is honorary accompanist, was handed a badge of office, and prizes for successes in billiards tournaments were handed to Deputy’ Stevens, Secretary’ Crabb and Fireman Whitley. Foreman Grant, a visiting firefighter, urged the setting up of committee to aid the United Fire Brigades’ Association to secure the compulsory training of school children in fireprevention. and to help the brigades in their great effort to remove New Zealand from its unenviable position at the head of the list of fire losses. A lengthy and much enjoyed concert programme was supplied by’ Alessrs. J. Bruce. Kissell. Swan. Williams, Sheldon Kindly. Beadle. Alassee. Lorigan. Proctor, Wren. Reg Rushden and Elder.
