CLAIM ON ANTARCTICA COULD BE CHALLENGED

JEALOUS OF BRITAIN AMERICAN WOMAN’S VIEW United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Tuesday. A message from Williamstown (Massachusetts) says Mrs. Laura Martin, geologist and geographer, of Washington, told members of the Institute of Politics which is now meeting there that many of Britain’s claims in the Antarctic, particularly in the Falkland Island dependencies and the Ross Sea dependency, are challengeable on the basis of right of discovery. She said Britain asserted dominion over several polar areas extending beyond those parts, discovered by Englishmen. She cited Wilkes Laud, the segment discovered by Lieutenant Wilkes, of the United States Navy, in 1840, although explored more fully by the Australian expedition in 191112. If Britain should project these claims to the pole, as ghe had done in the Falkland and the Ross dependencies, it could be seen that altogether she would claim nearly three-fifths of the continent, or 3,000,000 out of the 5,000,000 square miles.
