NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Northcote Borough Council met last evening, the Alayor. Air. A. E. Greenslade, presiding. Mr. F. S. Hyson, the Alain Highways Board representative on the No. 2 District Council, advised that the Kauri Gully Bridge, Lake Road, had been examined and the borough overseer’s proposals for repairs appeared to be justifiable as a temporary measure. Before approval of a £1 for £1 subsidy on the proposal could be granted he asked if the council proposed to reconstruct Onewa and Lake Road main highways in terms of proposals approved by the board in November 1928. It was decided that it was inadvisable to place the loan proposals before the ratepayers on the £ 1 for £1 subsidy offered, but in the event of a subsidy of £2 for £1 being granted the proposals for reconstruction would be submitted to the ratepayers. The question of houses surrendered to the Crown becoming non-rateable was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee, the opinion being that some amendment to the present law was desirable; also to communicate with other councils regarding taking combined action. To comply with the Alotor Regulations for adjusting motor headlights, a suitable testing ground has been marked out in Clarence Street. The sympathy of 1 the council is to be conveyed to the relatives of the late Mr. E. G. Frazer and Mrs. C. M. Ralston, victims of the recent motor fatality at Albany, Crs. H. J. C. George and J*. C. Cross, who attended as the council’s delegates at the conference of local bodies to : consider the establishment of an airport, presented their report. Discussion on the subject was deferred.
