MOUNT EDEN TRAGEDY
MRS. KIMM DIES IN HOSPITAL INQUEST OPENED TODAY The death occurred in the Auckland Hospital at 3.45 p.m. yesterday of Mrs. Margaret Kimm. aged 78, who, with her husband, the late Mr. Janies Kimm, was found unconscious in the sitting room of their home at 37 Grange Road,. Mount Eden, on th& morning of Saturday, July 12. They were both seated in front of a portable gas-heater, which was alight and almost white-hot. They were removed to the Auckland Hospital. where Mr. Kimm died on the Saturday evening. Mrs. Kimm has been in a serious condition ever since An inquest was opened on Mr. Kimm's death before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, on July 15. Mr. Kimm’s son-in-law gave evidence that ho had left Mr. and Mrs. Kimm listening to their new wireless set on the Friday evening:. The doors and windows were closed when witness left, and the heater was still alight. According to an inspector of the Auckland Gas Company, the smell of gas in the room would be due to imperfect combusion. If all doors and windows in a room were closed there would not be sufflicent ventilation to supply a heater, and the oxygen in the air would bo consumed, thus causing grave danger to life. A verdict of death by accidental poisoning was returned by the coroner. The inquest into the death of Mrs. Kimm was opened this morning, and adjourned.
