Xightlark made xhe early pace from Good Whiskey, Kentle. Sandhurst, Mosstrooper. and lentronie. The field was much reduced after going a mile. Kentle. Xightlark, and Adit fell, at intervals. Mauraki baulked, and stopped. Woomera ran off. Sandhurst went to the front nine furlongs from home, closely attended by Mosstrooper. Glentronie, Xamera. and G-jod Whiskey, while Orange Park was the only other one in the picture. approaching the straight Mosstrooper had fire lengths* lead from Sandhurst, and, finishing full of running, won easilv bv sia: lengths from Namera, with about four lengths separating second and third. Then came Sandhurst, with Orange Park a long way back. Hungarian and Max* ownit were not sighted. Time, 6.28}. Only two horses have ever won the Grand National Hurdles and Steeples in one year, Mosstrooper being the second to do so. He received a wonderful ova - tion. Mosstrooper also previously won the Australian Grand National Hurdles and Steeples. The only other horse to win The jumping double m one season was Red Leap. DOUTTAGALLA HURDLE RACE. BAT OF BISCAY. 10.5 (Thompson).. 1 AFFIRM, 10.10 (Turnerl 2 LORD DARN LEV, 0.7 (Wraight) .... 3 Ten started. Won by a length, with six lengths between second and third. Time, 4.30 J. Mosstrooper s win on Saturday adds further lustre to his brilliant record as a jumper. Apparently he is equally at home whether racing over hurdles or steeplechase fences, and in winning the two leading jumping doubles of the season in Victoria he must be regarded as the outstanding jumper in Australia today. Last season Mosstrooper won three steeplechases at Moonee Valley, and a hurdle race at Aspendale. Then he opened the current season brilliantly by ■winning the Australian Hurdles and Australian Steeplechase at Caulfield, and now be has set the seal to his fame for all time by winning the Grand National Hurdles and the Grand National Steeplechase. thus completing a very difflcplc double.
