MODERNISED HOMES

SUGGESTIONS OF BUILDERS A campaign to encourage the modernisation of houses throughout Auckland and its suburbs will, if launched, have the hearty support of the members of the Auckland Builders' Association. It is claimed that such an effort would relieve' considerably the i present depression in the building : trade. At the monthly meeting of the association members on Tuesday evening, tho president, Mr. R. A. Cornish, reported that he had represented the association at a meeting of a committee of the Chamber of Commerce, to consider how best to further the proposal, and ways and means were to bo devised for creating interest in the movement. Styles have changed of late years in regard to dwellinghouscs, as in other things. Designers and producers have introduced many conveniences and materials unknown 30 years ago, and builders are vitally interested in the suggestion that this is an opportune time for the owner of an antiquated house to convert his dwelling into a modern home by the addition of various amenities* which could be easily obtained at moderate cost. A calculation based upon the probable number of houses, and the average cost of alteration, disclosed an aggregate expenditure that would aid greatly in providing needed assistance in this period of stagnation to scores jof artisans, as well as to builders, architects, and traders. It was also suggested that the modernisation of old dwellings, carried out generally in a community spirit, would cause great improvement to the appearance of many Auckland streets. The individual expenditure would be comparatively small in most instances. Business premises could also be much improved by modernisation.
