JOY-BELLS RING

TOUCH OF ANXIETY ON GERMANY’S BIG DAY FREEDOM OF THE RHINE United P.A. —By Tele, graph—Copyright Reed. 10.10 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. “Tlie Times’s” Berlin correspondent says that though the joy-bells are ring ing throughout Germany over the liberation of the Rhineland, there is a strong undercurrent of anxiety noticeable concerning the economic future of the evacuated districts. Garrison towns, such as Mainz and Coblenz, will be hard hit by the disappearance of the Armies of Occupation, which were important contribu tions to their prosperity. This evening’s celebrations at Mainz inducted the illumination of the banks and bridges of the Rhine and the burning of bonfires on the surrounding hills. LOOKING TO FUTURE Massed choirs and bands joined in the thanksgiving hymns and patrioticsongs, and notable tributes were paid to the late Dr. Stresemann, who was acclaimed as the chief author of the liberation, which he did not live to see. A special session of the Reichstag was devoted to thanksgiving speeches. President Hindenburg lias sent a message to the German people emphasising their patience, patriotism and sacrifice until they had regained freedom, for the territory, that had been occupied by foreign troops since the unhappy ending of the war. “Let us,” he says, “unite after these years of affliction, and by peaceful paths lead our beloved Fatherland to better and brighter days.”
