ONEHUNGA ORPHANS’ CLUB

TO HELP THE C.T. DRIVE In view of the prevailing distress in the city and suburbs, Mr. R. G. Speight, president of the Onehunga Orphan?’ Club, at the Club’s meeting on Saturday evening, made an earnest appeal to members to co-operate with the Commercial Travellers’ Club in its forthcoming drive. This winter’s effort, said Mr. Speight, promised to be the most thoroughly organised campaign yet attempted and all orphans should render practical assistance to the Commercial travellers in that body’s efforts to alleviate the prevailing hardships of the unemployed. The chair was occupied by Bro. T. S. Bassett, a vice-president of the club, a large attendance of members and visitors being present.

The guests of the evening were BrcS A. Lasson, It. Holland and T. Fagan president and officers respectively of the Birkenhead-Northcote Orphans Club, on whose behalf Bro. Lasson suitably acknowledged their warm welcome.

Bro. E. Marks, programme Steward, submitted an excellent variety of musical and elocutionary items, among which were a masterly rendering by Professor Maxwell Walker of Henry V.’s address on the eve of Agincourt. and a clever and amusing imitation of the two Black Crows by Bros. Alex. Brown and E. V. Sutherland, interspersed with community singing. Songs were sung by Bros. J. McDougail, ,T. McMichael, W. Smart and T. Moffatt. Bro. Rushen contributed whistling solos. Bro. L. Butterworth played the concertina, and the veteran entertainer Bro. George Swan maintained his popularity as an elocutionist. The club’s orchestra, under Bro. J. Lighton contributed selections from “Pique Dame” and “The Belle of New York.” Bro. Len, Elliot made a sympathetic accompanist. The chairman announced that at the club’s next meeting on July 5, the Mayor of Onehunga. Mr. E. Morton, would have charge of the gavel.
