EXPLOSION AND FIRE
DEVONPORT HOUSE DAMAGED Firo caused damage which extended to several rooms, following an explosion in a seven-roomed wooden house at 7 Huia Street, Devonport, at 4 o’clock yesterday morning. The noise of the explosion roused a man living opposite. He summoned the Devonport Fire Brigade, which quickly had the outbreak under control. The owner of the house, Mr. W. C. Mills, was at Campbell’s Bay for the week-end, arid there was no one jn the building when the five started When the resident living opposite Mr. Mills’s looked out of a window, flames appeared to be coming from every room. He immediately called the brigade, which is stationed about a quarter of a. mile from the fire. The firemen made an excellent save. They broke through the back door and attacked the flames from both below and above. Several rooms were damaged, mainly about the walls and ceilings, which were discoloured by smoke. The flames in the basement had charred and burned the flooring and joists. A large quantity of the furniture was also damaged. The insurance on the dVveiling, furniture and effects amounts to about £I,BOO, in the National office.
