Brigadier Bill Lucky to Win

MIX-UP IN RUN HOME TIGHT FINISH IN SPRINT Special to THE SUX HASTINGS, Saturday. The conditions under which the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting - ! was concluded on Saturday were so j different from those under which it | opened on Friday that bettors who carefully followed the first day’s form found that they had somewhat wasted their time. On the first day the course was dry and fairly hard, but rain fell in torrents overnight and on the second day the events were contested in heavy going. In the circumstances it is not surprising that there were some results which were not generally expected. The totalisator handled £10.146, and there was a decrease of £6,287 on the meeting. Havelock Hurdles Raukaponga led off by beating :he favourites in the Havelock Hurdles and returning a good price. The favourite, Wyeford, fought with his rider and at the third fence came to grief. With five furlongs to go Raukaponga was in the lead, but High Society went after him. Neither stays well, but Raukaponga was too good for his novice opponent and beat him comfortably by three lengths. Airforce was third, a dozen lengths away, and Purseful a very bad last. Airforce is pacing poorly. High Society would not have been second but for the industry of his rider, H. Dulieu. Wyeford will win a minor hurdle race when well handled, j Trial Plate The private reputation of Vandyke j caused him to go out favourite for the Trial Plate. He ran a good race but was decisively beaten by Ganpat. Arrowzone was early in the lead and when the field was nicely settled down Ganpat was lying second and Vandyke. Arrowhead and Lady Spy all occupied good positions nearing the home turn, but in the final run Ganpat won decisively by a length and a-half from Vandyke. Acmil hung on to beat Arrowhead for third place. Arrowhead and Lady Spy did best of the others. The winner is good and Vandyke, who is Paleta’s young brother, should have a profitable future. June Steeplechase Poor class was represented in the June Steeplechase. Flying Swift was favourite, but he ran a poor race and the victory went to Brigadier Bill, who took charge five furlongs from home, but only just beat Sir Moment. The winner and second horse got mixed up in the run from the last fence, but Brigadier Bill survived the ensuing inquest. Red Bank ran off when going nicely. Charlatan always was tailed off and finished a furlong last. Kowhatu never had a chane. The feature of the race was the manner in which Flying Swift cut up. Hawke’s Bay Hurdles The Hawke’s Bay Hurdles introduced Conjurer 11., who was made favourite. He was always in the picture, but the useful Nucleus beat him by half a length. With experience and good

riding. Conjurer 11. should win races. Wharncliffe was never prominent. Ladies’ Handicap Though reserved for a final run, Rory Mor, who was favourite, was not good enough to win the Ladies’ Bracelet, and the victory went to Whakane. who beat Corneroff by a couple of lengths, with Rory Mor third and Break o’ Day and Tamworth next. Raukawa Handicap The Raukawa Handicap was one of the best contests of the day. Best Friend led out, but once the field settled down Gray dropped him in behind Tahoma and Adventus. The lastnamed pair carried on the running to the straight from Moth plane. Best Friend and Winlock. Best Friend had to be shaken up in the straight, but he responded well and won by a length and a-half from Adventus. Mothplane failed to run on and was a poor third, while Tahoma and Courageous were next. Best Friend was well ridden, but did his part nicely and is very useful. Final Handicap Backers sorted the wrong one out in going for Potoaform instead of Llyn Du (both being trained by Mrs. A. McDonald), the former being fourth fancy and Llyn Du seventh choice at double-figure odds. Moutoa Treasury was the actual favourite. Golden Shadow and Aston led out, but Paiko quickly took up the running and led across the top and into the straight from Aston, Golden Shadow, Potoaform, Bernera, Queen’s Choice and Llyn Du. Inside the distance Aston looked a winner, when Llyn Du put in his claim and finally won by a neck from Paiko. Aston tired and was only a nose behind Paiko. Next were Golden Shadow, Bernera and Queen’s Choice. Following are the results: Havelock Hurdles, of £150; 12 miles. 4 Rakauponga, 9.13, G. Tinsley, 1; 5 High Society, 9.3. H.
