Day of Dividends

BACKERS ASTRAY AT EPSOM Auckland Winter Trots REREMAI WINS MARK MEMORIAL UNDER most unfavourable weather conditions, the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter carnival was opened, on Saturday. Despite this drawback there was a good attendance to witness the many interesting contests which eventuated on a heavy track.

The coldness of the day was overshadowed by the warmth of the hospitality extended to patrons by the club’s president, Mr. J. Rowe, and the secretary, Mr. A. G. Mabee. The sport provided was keen, interesting and decidedly clean, making the duties of the stipendiary stewards, Messrs. R. T. Reid and A. E. Commons, light and pleasant. With the heavy state of the track backers were “all at sea,” favourites having a bad day. This, together with the adverse climatic conditions had a detrimental effect on the speculative market, which showed a decrease of £8,330 on last year’s opening day. The figures on Saturday were £30,358, against £38,088 in 1929. Some good prices were returned during the day, but Realty took pride of place in this respect, S. Groat’s pacer paying over two score. Stanmoor and Sebisca, who like Realty, are trained at Otahuhu, scored well, while the Man-gere-trained Reremai was successful in the Mark Memorial Handicap. To Awamutu scored a win with Kolmar, Wellington produced Blue and Gold, Gang Awa’, hailing from L*ongburn. while the only Canterbury candidate to pay a first dividend was the brilliant Harold Logan, who won like a real champion. Details of the racing and results are appended.

Blue and Gold Scores All started in the Winter Handicap, and there was pronounced support for Parrish Belle £544, with a big drop to Blue and Gold £213 and Ben Bingen £159. Early leaders were Nelson Girl, Zanzibar and Ben Bingen, and at the stands the last held charge from Blue and Gold, Nelson Girl, Parrish Belle and Zanzibar, who were all in close formation. Passing across the top Blue and Gold left her feet, with little effect, however, for at the stands again fehe was following Ben Bingen, Parrish Belle and Nelson Girl. The favourite assumed command down the back to lead into the straight, closely followed by Blue and Gold, Nelson Girl, and Ben Bingen, but, strongly challenged, Parrish Belle succumbed, leaving Blue and Gold to run home a winner threequarters of a length clear of Ben Bingen, who beat Nelson Girl by two lengths. Parrish Belle was fourth, followed by Audo Spray, Zanzibar and Royal Triumph. Realty’s Big Price Only £3B 10s was invested on Realty In the Mangere Handicap, his enterprising backers getting a return of over two score. Denver City was favourite, with £7lO, Belle o’ Mine carrying £313. Lord Lu made play early | from Realty, but the latter reversed the positions at the stand, where the pair were attended by Denver City, Bell© o’ Mine, Prince Pedro and Hohoro. The pacemaker increased his advantage down the back, and soon had a couple of lengths over Prince Pedro, with Denver City, Lord Lu, Belle o’ Mine and Hohoro following. Denver City improved his position running to the turn, and Hohoro also made up leeway, and these were the only alter-

ations into the home stretch. Nothing troubled Realty in the run to the post, where he had three lengths over Denver City, with Hohoro two and a-half lengths back third. Gold Treasure, Prince Pedro, Bell o' Mine, Arachne and Trustworthy were next. Kolmar’s Fine Effort Home Voyage was the medium of strong support in the Provincial Handicap, his figures being £914, as compared to Paradigm £595, while Kolmar carried £403. Direct Action, Marble Star and Rangitero led early and at the stands *this trio were followed by Kolmar, Audo Spray and Paradigm. There was little change in the next circuit, but leaving the straight tlie second time Kolmar unwound a fine burst of speed to lead into the back and secure a break of five lengths over Audo Spray and Direct Action. He kept this advantage right to the turn and was followed into the straight by Paradigm, Audo Spray and Home Voyage. Paradigm and Home Voyage made desperate efforts to catch the leader, but Kolmar held out to beat Paradigm by a neck, with Home Voyage two lengths away. Audo Spray, Direct Action and Rangitero led the rest. Reremai Comes Home Logan’s Pride, £747, held pride of place in the quotations on the Mark Memorial Handicap, with Linkman, £550, next in demand. The dividends were shared by outsiders, however, ir.

Reremai, £389, and Florent, £326. Genuine began smartest to lead Great Peter, Florent, Evelyn Locanda and Logan’s Pride, and this was*the order maintained past the stands, with Reremai, Vendome, Linkman and Sunshower following. When they came round to the stands again Genuine still held his position ahead of Great Peter, Florent. Logan’s Pride, Reremai (who were all close together), Linkman. Jewel Pointer, Sunshower and Cardinal Logan. Along the back Reremai began to go through with such effect that she took charge at the top and led into the straight from Florent and Genuine, with Evelyn Locanda. Logan’s Pride and Jewel Pointer racing in line next, followed by Linkman. A fine finish ensued, but Reremai fought it out all the way to gain the verdict by a neck from Florent, who beat Linkman by

two lengths. Evelyn Locanda was fourth, and then came Jewel Pointer, Genuine, Cardinal Logan and Logan’s Pride. Gang Awa s Rare Finish Country King’s dereat in the Hobson Handicap was another setback for punters, for his support amounted to £1.042, as against Invader (£456) and the winner, Gang Awa (£371). Hostess, Country King and Dealer were prominent at the start to lead past the stands from Gang Awa, Brutus, Vecto and Invader. This order was maintained in the next round, and at the stands the second time the only material change was Gang Awa, who had lost a little ground. Country King took up the running along the back from Invader, who supplanted the leader at the turn, with Gang Awa and Dealer following. Gang Awa did best from this out to beat Invader by a length and a-half, with the favourite two and a-half lengths farther back. Warspite, Neero. Dealer and Brutus were next. Sebisca’s Solidity Most money in the Stewards’ Handicap was found for Akenelii (£971) and Writer (£564), but the winner was found in Sebisca (£520). Sebisca was in front early from Nelson Boy, Anseline and Floraline, while Writer and Lady Fan were slow. At the stands Sebisca’s attendants were Nelson Boy, The Tartar, Akenehi (who made up her ground quickly), Floraline, Tradesman, Anseline, Olive Nelson and much the same order was kept in the next round. In the back stretch the last time Sebisca led Nelson Boy and Akenehi, but the last-named ran through at the top and led into the straight from Sebisca, Nelson Boy, Peter McKinney, Gold Sovereign and Floraline. The favourite could not hold his advantage to the post and Sebisca got up to inflict a head defeat. Peter McKinney was only a similar distance away third, and then followed Floraline, Gold Sovereign, Dipnoi and Nelson Boy. Stanmoor at Good Price Good betting in the Cornwall Handicap saw Warplane £825, and Wilma Dillon £690, the prime selections but again the favourites were routed in favour of Stanmoor £330, and Hal Chimes £319. Ngahuia was quickest to begin, and at the stands was being

chased by Warplane, Master Pluia, Hal Chimes and Stanmoor. Going down the back Ngahuia still held his place ahead of Hal Chimes, but the latter took up the running into the straight from Wilma Dillon and Stanmoor, with nothing between them. In the run home Stanmoor finished best to beat Hal Chimes by three-quarters of a length, with Wilma Dillon half a length back third. Warplane was fourth, just in front of The Abbey, All Bell and Ngahuia. Brilliant Harold Logan Country King and Harold Logan were big favourites for the Marconi Handicap, carrying £l,lBO and £1,147 respectively, and they paid the dividends. Richore and Benefice were soon in front, and passing the stands were followed by Cornelian, Country King, Woodvale and Harold Logan, who was wide out. Going along the back the leading pair was together just ahead of Country King and Mountain Dell, but crossing the top Harold Logan moved up fast on the outside to lead into the straight from Country King and Mountain Dell. Thus they finished, Harold Logan beating Country King by a length and a-half, with Mountain Dell three-quarters of a length back. Woodvale took fourth honours from Vecto. Great Ballin and Richore.
