In the* international lawn tennis match at Wimbledon between women’s teams from America and Britain for the Wightman Cup, Britain won by four matches to three. In the play on Friday, Mrs. Helen-Wills-Moody (America) beat Miss Joan Fry, G —l, 6 —l. Mrs. Watson (Britain) beat Miss Helen Jacobs, 2—6, 6—2, 6 —4. In the doubles, Misses Harvey and Fry (Britain) beat Misses Cross and Palfrey, 2 —6, 6 —2, 6—4. . In the games yesterday, in the singles, Miss Jacobs beat Miss Fry, 60, 6—3; Mrs. Wills-Moody beat Mrs. Watson, 7 —5, 6—l; Miss Mudford (Britain) beat Miss Palfrey, 6—o, 6—2. Mesdames Godfree and Watson beat Mrs. Wills-Moody and Miss Jacobs, 75, I—6. 6—4. BIASED ONLOOKERS AUSTRALIANS IN DAVIS CUP MILAN. Saturday. In the Davis Cup match between Australia and Italy, in the singles yesterday Stefani (Italy) beat Hopman, .6 —3, 3 —6, 7—5, 6—2; de Morpurgo (Italy) defeated Crawford, 5—7, 6—2, 6 4, 3 —G, 6—4. In the doubles matches today Hopman and Willard will piiay Gasilini and de Morpurgo, and in the singles on Monday Hopman will meet de Morpurgo. and Crawford will play Stefani. Both singles were played under most trying conditions, owing to the crowd’s barracking and anticipating the linesmen’s decisions by calling out before the ball had touched the ground, which was most disconcerting to Hopman. Stefani played an excellent game, and his passing shots were exceptionally strong. Crawford was not at the top of his form. PRAGUE, Saturday. In the Davis Cup match between Czecho-Slovakia and Japan, in the opening match, Menzel (Czechoslovakia) defeated Harada, 9 —ll, 6—3, 75. 6—l. Later in the doubles, Hopman and Willard beat Morpurgo and Gaslini, 9—7, 9—7, 4—6, 6—4. FOOTBALL IN SYDNEY SYDNEY, Sunday. In a League football match yesterday. before 15,000 spectators, the Kangaroos defeated Rest of Australia by 42 points to 19. The winners played a dazzling game. The Inter-State Association match yesterday was marred by accidents, two players being taken to hospital. New Sou tli Wales easily defeated Queensland by four goals to 1.
