Six Horses Won Thirteen Races

ELLERSLIE'S DUAL WINNERS AUCKLANDERS DO WELL At last week’s Great Northern | meeting half a dozen horses between them got away with 13 out of the 22 races staged by the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie. That did not leave very much for the other competitors. Indeed, of the £13,950 given away in prize money by the A.R.C., these six horses captured in wins (and other place-money, too), the sum of £5,950 —about 43 per cent, of the total prize money. These horses were Taumai (three wins), Aurora Borealis, Luminary, Master Lu, Gold Money, and Chromadyne (two wins each). In all, this sextet scored 5.3 wins in 14 starts, and Aurora Borealis was the only one that did not get the possible —she finished third in the big Hurdles prior to winning on the second and third days of the meeting. Interesting Records The record of these horses- last week was as follows: Taumai. —First in Penrose Hurdles; first in Remuera Hurdles; and first in Campbell Hurdles. Stakes won, £l,lOO. Aurora Borealis. —Third in Great Northern Hurdles; first in Great Northern Steeplechase: and first in Winter Steeplechase. Stakes won. £2,250. Luminary. First in Panmure Hurdles; first in Orakei Hurdles. Stakes won, £6OO. Master Lu. —First in Green Lane Steeplechase; first in Tamaki Steeplechase. Stakes won, £6OO. Gold Money.—First in Members’ Handicap; first in King George Handicap. Stakes won, £BSO. Chromadyne.—First in J-ervois Handicap (first division); first in Carbine Plate. Stakes won, £550. There were other performers last week that raced consistently. Perhaps the best was Lucess, who scored a first and two seconds. Havering had three runs for a first, a second, and a fourth. Captured the Plums Although horses from outside the province won only four races, they secured the biggest prizes on offer. Aurora Borealis and King’s Jest won the two Great Northerns, and Havering took the sprint on the final day. In addition, the first-named won the Winter Steeplechase. It was quite a pleasant change for Auckland owners to do so well at an Ellerslie meeting. In wins, Southerners secured £3,955, and they also took £I,OOO in place money, making in all £4,955 for the Southern sportsmen and £8,995 for Auckland owners. So although the visitors won but four races with three horses, they roped in much more than a third of the stakes. BACK IN THE GAME F. C. PORTER—TRAINER VETERAN JOCKEY’S DECISION F. C. Porter, intends making his home in Auckland, and will carry out the duties of a trainer. After his retirement Porter took up a hotel business, but racing proved irresistible and a horse under his care

affords him the opportunity to set up as a trainer. Porter did well during his riding career and won many notable races, including a number of classics for Mr' J. S. Barrett, who raced that good horse Count Cavour.

LAME AGAIN HOARIRI TO BE RETIRED Owing to a recurrence of the unsoundness which has interfered with his preparation on past occasions, it has been decided to retire Hoariri from the turf and this took effect when he broke down in the sprint on the first day of the winter meeting. . Hoariri was a sprinter with a lot of brilliance and he could run out six furlongs solidly, while at his best he aiways took a power of beating. However, the son of Antagonist still retains liis usefulness for owner-trainer -H. Rama, who intends giving' him a term of stud duty. ADELAIDE CUP WON BY MARGATE United l’.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright ADELAIDE, Monday. The Adelaide Cup, run today, resulted: Margate, 7.2, Medhurst, 1; JSt. Mary 7 2 Slattery, 2; Kidaides, 9.0, Walker 3.
