SCHOOL STILL CLOSED

DIPHTHERIA CASES AT POKENO further swabbing planned The Poke no School, which did not reopen on Tuesday after the term holi* days on account of the outbreak of diphtheria among the children, is to remain closed next week to permit the Health Department officers to ensure there are no positive cases among those suspected. It is understood seven or eight families are affected by the malady, but the definite diagnosing of suspected cases has been complicated by the prevalence of colds and ® or ® throats, which were responsible to some extent for the alarm felt by “any residents. During the past week ■itiO swabs were taken by departmental officers, who covered every hem'e where there had been illness from the Uazorback to Pokeno Valley, and two pore positive cases were found, one being a “carrier.” During next week another two swabs will be taken of suspicious cases. Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer of health, today stated the chairman of Jhe Auckland Education Board, Mr A. burns, had approved his recommendatlon not to reopen the school until a’l Precautionary measures were completed. The main reason for the extension was to check the growth of illness through “carriers,” who were difficult to detect.
