j 3 SUCCESSFUL EVENING For the purpose of raising funds to retain the services of the Plunket nurse in Northcote, the committee organ ised a dance on Thursday evening in the Palais Theatre. It was the largest and most successful dance held at N orthcote. The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade. in welcoming those present on behalf of the committee, expressed appreciation of the generous response that had already been accorded this worthy object and conveyed messages of support from the medical profession. Both Dr. Dudding, Northcote. and Dr. J. \Y. Craven, Birkenhead, would give their hearty support whenever it was required. During the evening vocal solos were given by Mr. Chas. Hunter, Miss Molly Heath acting as accompanist. A Monte Carlo competition resulted in Mr. and Mrs. H. YV. Tver being declared the winners. The competition for a prize, pre-

AVONDALE WOMEN’S CLUB ADDRESSED BY REV. W. G. MONCKTON

The monthly meeting of the Avondale Women's Club was held in the Blockhouse Bay Picture Hall on Tuesday, May 27. The president, Miss Newton, was in the chair. A request for support was received

from the secretary of the recentlyformed Blockhouse Bay Improvement Association, which has guaranteed £IOO to the City Council toward a fund to prevent further encroachment of the sea at Blockhouse Bay. Miss Ellen Melville wrote offering to come out at a future date, preferably in tho evening, and give an illus-tl-oted lecture advocating the purchase of New Zealand-made goods as a pre <- tical and valuable remedy for unemployment. The Rev. W. G. Monckton delivered an address on "The London Naval Conference.” His audience included, by special invitation, the teachers and senior scholars of the Avondale South School. A recitation, given by Miss Alice Kealy, was very much enjoyed. Tea. served under the direction of Mrs. Egerton Gill, and the usual social chat, brought the meeting to a close.
