REGENT, EPSOM

OPENING TALKIE PERFORMANCE The grand opening performance will take place this evening' of the Regent Theatre, Manukau ltoad, Epsom, o.s a talkie house. The very latest talkie equipment has been installed, the acoustics are excellent and a most enjovable entertainment is „ assured. For the opening performance the Amalgamated Theatres management has been fortunate in securing the brilliantly outstanding English talkie. “Atlantic.” The storv is concerned with the development of that strength of character in the average person which can stand against a supreme emergencyin this case, the wreck of an Atlantic liner on the iceberg while it is making a record trip. In its earlier stages the film confines itself to building up a general impression on the lives and natures of the people concerned, the plans the yhave in view, and of the atmosphere of such a journey. When the tragedy occurs, few of the passengers will be lieve that it is really serious, a*ul the knowledge is kept from the majority as long as possible. There is room in the boats for the women, and they are certain of safety if they can survive the cold, but all those who have to remain aboard —the men and a few women who will not leave their husbands —are equally certain to be lost. There are some scenes oZ real dramatic power, and the whole is characterised by English emotional restraint. “Atlantic” is vastly different from the majority of films, and should not bo missed by any lovers of the drama. The voices and sound effects generally are very good, and the film is acted by a company of splendid English artists, including Miss Ellaline Terris (Mrs. Seymour ITicks). Franklyn Dyall, John Longden, Donald Calthorp, Monty Banks, John Stuart, Madeline Carroll and Joan Barry. A full programme of talkie supports will also be presented this evening.
