Awapuni Horses for Ellerslie

MISTER GAMP’S FRIENDS MANAWATU OPTIMISTS Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON N., Friday. It had been intended that members 'of the British Rugby football team | would pay a visit to Awapuni on Wednesday morning to witness training operations and, to that end, all fast work had been curtailed on the previous morning, which is recognised as a galloping morning. Unfortunately the advent of heavy rain resulted in the visitors having to forgo their visit and local mentors were left with no alternative but to go through with their training operations under unfavourable conditions. With the regular routine upset, matters were consequently uninteresting for, with the tracks extremely heavy, there was little of a fast nature attempted. Of those engaged at Auckland, Mister Gamp, Aurora Borealis and Hymestrason were jumped, the last-named leaving for Ellerslie the same evening. The other pair went North last nigh* and it is anticipated by their connections that they will run prominently. With R. Reed in the saddle, Mister Gamp, in company with Robbie’s Mistake, ran a mile, the last six furlongs taking 1.30 2-5. The chestnut gelding was quite anxious to go on with it and, despite his 11.5, he will have manylocal supporters on the day. In Hunters’ 1 Hurdles Four Aces has also gone North and, with D. Heap in the saddle, he was sent over a round of the battens the reverse way to give a very satisfactory display. A. McDonald was to have gone North to ride Four Aces and Hymestrason, but this horseman was uncertain whether he would forgo the trip in favour of the Otaki meeting. Mrs. McDonald’s stable will be represented by Airforce and others at Otaki and it is not improbable that Alan McDonald will be associated with the Warplane gelding there. Yesterday morning Airforce did a round of the battens to give a satisfactory display, but it would appear that the dav alone will decide who will be his pilot. W. J..Bowden will be associated with Mister Gamp in his Great Northern

Hurdles essay, while J. P. Coyle’s other candidate, Paliu, will be piloted by R. S. Bagby. „ The last-named has not been in work any great length of time after his spell and it appears to be asking rather too much of him to win in consequence, but he cannot be hurriedly dismissed nevertheless. Otaki Engagements R. Reed.—Ridgemount, The Swell, Merry Melody, Patearoa and probably Terra Firm a. K. Voitre.—Myola, Callanmore, Coon Song, Tourist. C. Broughton.—Merry Damon, Avro and Magic Land. J. Nicolson. —Moutoa Treasury. H. Wiggins.—Keddar, R.obbie’s Mistake. M. Gilmore. —Moutoa’s Acre. B. H. M’orris. —Glenrossie. W. Broughton.—Arrowhead. Equitant. Llyn Du. T. Metcalf did not return home after tho Ashburton meeting, the local horseman going straight on to the Dunedin fixture. In the event of Alan McDonald not going North to Ellerslie, he will probably be associated with Airforce and Potoaform at Otaki. Dobbin is down to compete at the Otaki fixture, but no horseman has been engaged for him as yet. Incidentally, Dobbin’s mentor, E. W. Watson, has a rising three-year-old by Royal Divorce —Railand in work, but the filly is a very plain looker, although time might prove that she has her dam’s pace. Another Jumping Recruit Corneroff, who has been purchased by Mr. C. F. Vallance, is being put to the jumping game, and was yesterday put over the battens by Alan McDonald. The Danilof gelding has a fair ! amount of pace on the flat and might well make good in this branch of the Trojan Melody is an unlikely starter on the first day at Otaki and G. W. New’s stable may be represented on the King’s Birthday by Terra Firma, a commanding Acre youngster. Trojan Melody will no doubt be found in on the second day. Blacksmith, an Arrowsmitli gelding in Mrs. A. McDonald's stable, has been j purchased at a high figure by one of the lady mentor’s patrons. The young- j ster has shown a good turn of speed ; I in his track essays, while he has the I | added ability to jump. He is due to J i come in on the second day at Otaki. ! but some doubt meantime exists as to ! j whether he is at home in the heavy . I going. Mrs. McDonald has taken in hand ; I the two youngsters purchased by Mr. ! | A. Symes at the Trentham sales, tho j ! one being the Chief-Ruler —Marceline ; ! colt, who is a full-brother to Princess [ Betty, and the other a Paper Money ; I youngster out of Tango, the dam being I ! a half-sister to Pavlova and Anitea, the j | dam of Rapier. i Elicit, who was compelled to forgo ! his trip to Auckland, is back in active I work, but a doubtful leg makes it ques- | tionable whether mucli will be asked j him for some time to come. Red j Fuchsia, on the other hand, is still out in the paddock and there is little pros- j j pect of his being asked to race again j this season. Braggart, who claims an engagement j in the Maiden at Otaki, will not fulfil j his engagement on the first day at J least. A big upstanding sort, he shows j L rather much daylight underneath. £oj
