League “All Blacks”

SECOND TRIAL TOMORROW

Thus in addition to being - keen to win or retain the emblem of Dominion League supremacy, the members of both teams will have a double incentive, in that they will be anxious to catch the selectors’ eyes. Mr. E. K. Asher, North Island selector, will witness the match and on the form shown, | will no doubt depend to a'great extent : the composition of the North Island team to play the South Island at Aucki land in the final trial of the series, j The following are the teams for to- ; morrow: AUCKLAND Fullback: C. Dufty (Ellerslie). Threequarters: Bachelor (Marist), Brisbane (Marist), G. Perry (City). Five-eighths: M. Wetherill (City), L. Seagar (Devonport). Half: W. Shortland (City)'. Forwards: Clarke (Marist), Len. Barchard (City), W. Skelton (Ponsonby), .1. O’Brien (Marist). Pascoe (City). Clark (City). Reserves: L. O’Leary, Peckham, T. O’Leary, Francis, and Stevens. SOUTH AUCKLAND Fullback: G. Rayner (Huntly). Threequarters: Kelly (Ngarnawahia), Scott (I-luntly), Tittleton (Ngaruawaliia). Five-eighths: Williams (Ngaruawahai), B. Paki (Huntly). ! Half: Abbott (Ngaruawahia). j Forwards: Jones (Fluntly), Timms i (Huntly), Menzies (Ngaruawahia). j Quinn (Hamilton), Stephenson (Huntly), Trautvetter (Huntly). Referee: Mr. P. Rogers (Auckland). Messrs. A. McKubrey and V. Simpson have been appointed line umpires. The ,Auckland team is to assemble at. the tepid baths at 2 p.m. tomorrow I afternoon. I Many changes have been made to the Auckland team which defeated Northland. A completely new threequarter line appears, and a new full- ! back also. Dufty reappears in his old role in the last named position, and should be a considerable improvement on Campbell, as he is in good form at the present time. Brisbane the crack Marist back takes his place in the reps _ for the first time this season, and his inclusion at centre threequarter should make the Auckland attack a most dangerous one. Clarke, of Marist, comes into the forwards as does Barchard of City and Bill Skelton of Ponsonby. O’Brien, Clark (of City) and Pascoc retain their places. HOT HUNTLY FORWARDS The South Auckland men put up a great fight last year, and with essentially the same team on the field tomorrow the visitors should be able to make Auckland step out. The South Auckland pack, especially, is very strong, and one or two of the forwards have a chance of a trip to Australia. The curtain raiser to the main game will be a junior representative match between Auckland and South Aucklal The Auckland team will be selected from the following: W. Seagar, R. Wilson, R. Stall worthy, Pell, Tate, Joy, Agnew, Powell, W. White Clark, T. Hapi, Meiklejohn, ! Weavers. Hunt. Hawkes. Stehr, Donovan.

JUNIOR GRADE NOTES TOMORROW’S REP. GAME All second grade matches under the control of the Auckland R.ugby League’s junior management committee for tomorrow have been cancelled, as a junior representative match, Auckland v. South Auckland, is to be played at Carlaw Park as a curtainraiser to the Northern Union Challenge Cup match. The Auckland juniors who were picked for practice included live men from Devonport, six from Richmond, three from Marist, four from Ponsonby and two from Mangere. It is as yet not possible to gauge the relative strengths of the two teams. The Auckland team is well up to the strength of those of recent years, but it has been reported that the South Auckland team includes several players who have been playing senior football in the mining area this season. The game should be an admirable one for a curtain-raiser. After a good even game the second grade match between Devonport and Otahuhu resulted in a win for Devonport by 13 to 5 on Saturday. Otahuhu scored first when Glynn, half way through the first spell, intercepted and scored a good try between the posts, Kelly converting. Devonport tried hard to score and equalled right on halftime. The second half was sternly contested and it was only in the last ten minutes that Devonport scored two

tries, which put the result beyond doubt. For Devonport Clayton, at fullback, and Hunt, first five-eiglith, were the best backs, while the forwards all worked well. For Otahuhu, Wax, Arnold and Glynn in the backs played good games, while Brown and McDonald in the forwards tackled determinedly.

South Auckland v. Auckland THE Northern Union Challenge Cup match, South Auckland v. Auckland,..which is to he played at Carlaw Park toi . ‘l-row afternoon, will be in effect the second trial match of lid* season for the selection of the New Zealand representative side which is to leave Auckland on June 27 on a tour of Australia.

The third grade open match, Ellerslie v. Avondale, played on the Ellerslie reserve, was a hard fought and interesting game, Ellerslie finishing up winner by six points to three. The Ellerslie team has made a wonderful improvement in recent weeks. The forwards, led by Arthur and Howarth, played a sterling game, repeatedly saving the side when things looked dangerous.

The try scored by Prince, when the ball was taken over half the field, was a fine one, as was also that by Beetson, who secured from the scrum and forced his way over. Glenn at fullback, although lie did not handle quite as cleanly as he usually does, played a sound game. The backs combined well, but the insides were inclined to go just too far before passing.

The Otahuhu fifths met Akarana on Saturday, winning by 13 to 0. Hid,ge and Forder, the latter a forward who played at centre threequarter and scored two good tries, were the best backs. Kay and Young in the forwards did well. Kay was good, following up continually to harass the opposition.

For Akarana McWilliams at fullback played a safe game, while Eagan was the most noticeable of the others.

Kingsland 6A in being defeated by Devonport last Saturday was not disgraced. Kingsland is the lightest team in the grade and has some promising players. A Holt at fullback played a good game, but would do better if he played closer up and made more use of the touchline. Peters, Lewis and Meno did the most they could with the few chances they got. U. Holt did a lot of work and did it well, but he must remember that he has men behind him ready to take a pass. The same applies to Smith. Bridge and Weavers were the best of a good lot of forwards. The team is weak in not getting the ball from the scrum and not putting enough ginger into its play.

After a very keen game the Ellers-lie-Point Chevalier match ended in a draw—nil all. The wet ball seemed to hamper the Ellerslie boys. Their backs did not get going as in previous matches. The forwards, led by Wiltshire and Pinches, played well. Green at fullback was safe and handled well, but is apt to take things a bit too calmly. The Ellerslie backs were sound on defence.

The Ellerslie-Otahuhu schoolboys’ match on Saturday was a very interesting game, Ot.ahuhu winning by 16 points to 6. The Ellerslie team has only been recruited this year, and it will take a match or two for it to settle down. On Saturday it showed much improved form.
