APPEAL PENDING
RESTRICTIONS ON SAMOA LAWYER APPLICATION REFUSED Private advice received in Auckland today from Samoa states that Mr. I“. B. Fitzherbert applied in tlie High Court of Western Samoa for a modi | cation of the restrictions imposed by the court on Mr. T. B. Slipper, barrister and solicitor. Mr. Slipper was fined £lO5 and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for publishing a defamatory libel against the Administrator, Mr. S. S. Allen. He was released on bail, and an appeal is now' pending in the Supreme Court against the sentence t Judge Luxford. The conditions of bail required that Mr. Slipper would not move beyond a one-mile radius of the central office. Apia, and he has been fined once for being outside these limits. Tlie message from Samoa states that Mr. Slipper refused to apply for any concessions, and that Mr. Fitzherbert sponsored the application. Inspector Braisby. on behalf of the police, asked that, the restrictions on Mr. Slipper should be tightened, and. that he should not be allowed to converse with half-caste European - Samoans while on bail. Judge Duxford refused botli applications.
