GRAMMAR PRAISED
EARL JELLICOE’S LETTER “New Zealand cadets have put up a remarkable record for last year, and the boys of the whole Dominion are to be heartily congratulated on the splendid example they have given. "Would that the Mother Country followed it!” This comment has been made by Earl Jellicoe, formerly Governor-Gen-eral of New Zealand, in a letter to the headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, Air. 11. J. D. Mahon, congratulating the school cadet battalion on its success in the Imperial Challenge Shield rifle-shooting competition. Earl Jellicoe also said: “I note that A Company, Second Cadet Battalion of the Auckland Regiment (Auckland Grammar School), has won my trophy in the Imperial Challenge Shield competition for last year. May I beg you to give my sincere congratulations to the company, to the staff sergeants, and to the whole school, of which I retain such pleasant memories. I only wish that I could have been in Auckland to present the trophy personally.” The cadets of the British Empire compete annually for the shield, and Earl Jellicoe’s trophy is for the New Zealand company gaining the highest scores.
