ARIKIWAI’S WIN

DEFEATS STARSHOOTER BY A NECK GREENAWAY’S ASHBURTON SPRINT Press Association ASHBURTON. Saturday. , The Ashburton Racing Club’s winter meeting was held today in fine weather and before a good attendance, the course being in excellent order. The totalisator handled £9.142 10s, against £12,19S last year. Three favourites were brought horm-* J by A. E. Ellis, but four of the other i winners were at double figures. The High-Weight Audience was made a firm favourite | lor the High-Weight Handicap, and after getting sway well was held in | third place till the field had turned into the straight, where she was asked to go out and challenge the pace-mak-ing Solgele and Royal Mint, whose pretensions she quickly settled and went on to win by a length with greater ease than the margin suggests. Royal Mint, having only his second race since his spell, ran excellently, and the third horse, Oriflamb, finished on as well as anything except the winner. Best of the others was Semper Paratus. who came from the back in the straight. Mastei' Garland broke a blood vessel and bled j to death. Longbeach Hack Punchestown was held in check till 1 the straight was reached in the Longbeach Hack Handicap, and at that point was lying in behind Tariff. Fair i Money, Garvary and three or four j others. An opening came for him inside the distance, and he flashed through, getting up to Fair Money, who had displaced Breakaway and Tariff just before the post was reached. Fair Money was smartest away, and was never farther back than second. Arrowmaid and Tariff had no fight left for the finish, but Flaxbird came from well back, and will be worth watching in near engagements. I. Tilson, rider of Tariff, was suspended for a month for crossing Garvary. Selma Trot The Selma Trot served to produce in ! Arethusa one of the best two-year-olds st en at this stage of the year for many a. day. Her sterling victory makes her I the logical choice for the Sapling Stakes. She was very slow to find her feet, but that fact made her effort all the more convincing. Five furlongs from home she moved fast into fifth place behind Red Shadow, Clapham, Logaleen and Wardbird. Thereafter she had too much in reserve, and in a battle royal with Red Shadow (previously favourite for the Sapling Stakes) she had all the say and won nicely by a neck. Logaleen was a medium third, followed by Goldworthy. Arethusa is susceptible to improvement. Autumn Handicap A. E. Ellis estimated the ability of Arikiwai to an inch in the Autumn Handicap, for he was content to view the race from behind till well into the straight, where he came with a deadly inn on the outer and smothered evervthing except Starshooter, who stuck with him, but went down by a nose in the last few strides. Starshooter drifted in the middle stages, otherwise he might have brought about the defeat of the warm favourite. Glen rowan ran a good race, and Haze was prominent for a mile. Trial Plate Outside fancies hud easy victories in each division of the Trial Plat**. In the first heat Miss Bradbury quicklv displaced Night Recital in the lead and was never headed, winning very easilv ■ l y three lengths from Bellbird. who ! was always handy, with Night Recital j two lengths further away. Weather i Raid and Minerval were next. In the second heat Appeal showed the way to the straight to Craigavon ; ufld Arrogant, but at the distance j I Craigavon put in a run and scored bv J ; two lengths from Appeal, with the fast- | I finising Swiftray third and Painkiller j and Bay Queen next. Eiffelton Hack Sapient was sipartest away in the) Eiffelton Handicap, but she was con- ' tent to give up her position to Kentish i Lady and Colonel Quex until they 1 were fairly into the straight. Then j she came at them, and soon had their measure. Hard ridden, she was able ! to hold Thurso and Audience at bay. necks separating the three at the I finish. Thurso lay behind the winner I all the way, but Audience came from 1 the back. Rapina was prominent at the 1 turn and finished well, but Kentish | Lady and Colonel Quex found the dis- • ! tance too far. Rakaia Trot Although Harold Denver stumbled near the finish of the Rakaia Trot. ! ►Sodium appeared to hold his measure at the time, and it is unlikely that the ! mistake affected the result. Harold ! j Denver made all the running to tlm straight, where Sodium had paced

j brilliantly into second, followed bv Doric, Flying Cloud, Glenville and j Great Abdallah. Then Sod um went j on to score comfortably. Glenville was j six lengths away third. followed by j Great Abdallah and Flying (’loud. The j last-named, a Sapling Stakes candidate, ran a fine race. Farewell Handicap In the Farewell Handicap Arrowmir i made play to the straight to Subdivi- • vision. First Raid. Greenaway and j Rascal, with The Raider at the tail of i the field. The first-named two tnen petered out, leaving First Raid anrT Greenaway to fight for the honours, the latter prevailing by a neck, with i The Raider three lengths away, at the head of the others. This was the winner’s first success since she beat Cylinder and Hunting Cry in the A.ILC. Stakes. First Raid is well forv.-ard and should win soon, and The Raider will benefit by the race. PASSED IN ROSE LUPIN NOT SOLD | Efforts were made to sell the threei year-old, Rose Lupin, by auction At Taumarunui on Saturday, but even the fact that she wan won just previously could not entice a bid of more j than lOOgns., at which figure she was | passed in. Rose Lupin, who carries the colours i of her owner-trainer, H. L. Russell. I contested the First Division of the five furlongs scamper, the Matapuna Hack Handicap, and at a double-figure price i she displayed an abundance of pace j to hold on and stall off Sir Kay’s late | effort. It certainly made matters look bright 1 for the sale immediately after, but no ! one wanted the filly, even at a reasonj able price. She made an appearance later in the : Owhango Hack Handicap, but was not I suited by a mile.
