BUILDING IN N.Z.
Drop for First Three Months of Year DECLINE IN AUCKLAND According to the Monthly Abstract of Statistics for April, building permits for new dwellings issued in the larger towns of New Zealand during the month of March were 14.1 per cent, lower than the number issued during March, 1929, and in fact easily record the lowest number for this month of any year since monthly figures were first made available in 1926. The cumulative figure for the first three months of the year is also the lowest on record and shows a decline of 16.8 per cent, from that for the corresponding .period of 1929. The totals of all permits for the month and the three months show recessions of 22 per cent, and 12.9 per cent, respectively. Both these figures created new low-level records. Taking the figures for individual towns it is noticeable that practically the whole of the decrease is accounted for by the decline in building in the Auckland area, the other three chief centres and the total for the secondary centres showing only minor movements.
