PLAZA
“PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ” The current picture at the Plaza Theatre, “Puttin’ on the Ritz” is a story of vaudeville, night clubs and Broadway revues. Purely by coincidence, the story parallels rather closely the-actual career of the star. Harry Richman began his career as pianoplayer and singer in obscure cabarets. He gained some experience in dramatic stock companies, toured vaudeville, then leaped into fame suddenly about three years ago as the star of George White’s “Scandals.” Joan Bennett plays opposite Richman. The supporting cast includes many prominent names, among them James Gleason, Aileen Pringle, Lilyan Tashman, Richard Tucker, Eddie Kane and Purnell Pratt. Irving Berlin wrote a number of songs especially for the picture, and Edward Sloman directed the production, under the supervision of John W. Considine, jun., general production executive at the United Artists’ studios.
Fay Wray appears as a Spanish senorita in “The Texan,” Gary Cooper's recently completed outdoor talkie. The talking film is adapted from O. Henry’s popular short story, “The Double-Dyed Deceiver.”
