LONDON PRODUCE MARKET
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE The Department of Agriculture lias received the following cablegram, dated May 10, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: Tallow.—No auction was held this week. The spot market is very quiet, and quotations are unchanged. The fruit market is steady. Apples ex the Fort Brisbane were practically cleured. Cox’s Orange made 15s to 20s; Jonathan and Delicious, 13s to 15s; Cleopatra, 14s; Dunn’s Favourite, 10s to 13s; Adam’s Pearmain, 11s to 12s; London Pippin, 10s to l*Ls; Blenheim, 11s to 13s Pears were in good condition generally. Prices a crate were: Beurre Bose and Beurre Diel, 12s to 16s; "Winter Cole, 12s to 15s; Vicar of Winkfield, 12s; Beurre Dapiamont, 14s; Comice, 20s; Packham (over-ripe and yeasty), 9s to 12s.‘ The Matakana has arrived, but her fruit has not yet been sold. Hemp.—The Manila market has further declined, with freer offerings and poor inquiry. “J” grade, May-July shipment, was quoted down to £26, but sellers were more reserved at the close, and quoted £27. The sisal market is easier in sympathy with Manila. March-May shipments, fair average quality No. 1, sold down to £3O; AprilJune shipments were offered at" the same price at the close, but buyers retired. No. 2 was offered at £29, good marks nominally 10s more. In the New Zealand ' market no interest was shown except at low prices. A small spot lot was offered c.i.f. .Antwerp, high fair £ 30. fair £ 37, but there were no buyers. Orders have been telegraphed to New Zealand for fair at £26 10s. Wool.—There was a good inquiry for tops, and stocks have been reduced by the partial stoppage of the mills, and values are hardening. Present quotations are: 64’s, warp. 2s SJ-d to 2s 6d; average, 2s 4£d to 2s sd; 56’s, Is 9d; 50’s, prepared, Is s*d; 40’s, Is 4d. . Linseed.—The market was quiet and easier during this week. Indian was firm at the close. May-Juhe shipment, Calcutta, sold at £lB 17s 6d. There were sellers of Bombay at £l9 ss, Plate, £l7 2s 6d.
