SUBURBAN SPORTS GROUNDS

ARRANGEMENTS AT OTAHUHU Delegates representing the Otabuliu League and Kugby Union Football Clubs, and the Otahuhu Hockey Club, met the parks and reserves committee of the Otahuhu Borough Council on Tuesday evening, when arrangements were finalised for the allocation of playing areas for the present season. It was decided that the Union and League codes use Sturges Park and the Princes Street reserve on alternate Saturdays, the arrangements commencing next Saturday, when Rugby will be played on Sturges Park, and League on the reserve. The grounds are not quite suitable for hockey, being five yards too narrow, but both codes of football agreed to co-operate with the sister code in the event of it wanting to stage a special match at home. CONFERENCE AT PAPATOETOE A conference attended by delegates representing the Papatoetoe Rugby Football Club, League Football Club. Hockey Club, Cricket Club, and Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, met the parks committee of the Papatoetoe Town Board on Tuesday evening to discuss matters relative to fees payable for the use of sports areas in the town district.

The members of the committee outlined a scheme of contemplated improvements. and said the proposed charges were £7 10s for a playing area for a season.

The sports clubs* delegates expressed tho opinion that the charge was not excessive, considering the work the board intended to carry out, but they questioned the ability of their clubs to find the money.

Mr. W. J. llindman. president of the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, said that it was not wholly a question of £.s.d. Sport was rendering a good service to the district. and the ratepayers benefited. Many of the officials who controlled the sports club did not participate in the sport itself. but carried on for the good of the district, showing a good

public spirit. He recommended that all of the sports’ bodies should combine and hold a carnival to raise the amount aimed at by the town board viz., £ 52.

After a long discussion it was decided that the delegates refer the board’s proposals to their respective clubs, and another conference will be held at a later date.
