TRY-OUTS AT HAWERA COURSE IN SPLENDID ORDER Special to THE £LD» WAXGAXUI. Tuesday. Quite a number of spectators were present at the Hawera racecourse th*s morning to witness the winding-up gallops of local horses for the meeting commencing on Thursday. Se\ eral owners were in attendance to see their horses work. The plough was in good order, but most of the fast work was performed on the outside of the course proper, which provided splendid going. On the Plough Benzora galloped well, but his ti'aek work of late has not been impressive. Latakia wont specially well, beating Jovspear decisively over seven furlongs in 1.32 i, the first half-mile being run in 31. Course Proper Rossferrv and Mount Shannon begin slowly over the first two of a six-fur-long gallop, running home the last half-mile in 54. Mount Shannon finishing in front. Bright Glow and Prince Desmonu sprinted three furlongs together in 4". Xgawhine performed half pace work. Llanore and Silvermine again went the short mile in 1.45. Silvermine being a neck in front at the finish. Calamine surprised by beating Just So over five furlongs by half a length in 3.6. Calamine is coming on rapidly and may go well fresh. . Mondip is looking bright and is standing up to his work well. He galloped a good half-mile this morning, defeating Kiosk by a length in 52Mountain Heath, a Mcßae Handicap candidate, looks in perfect racing condition and was given pace work on the plough. Yesterday morning Mountain Heath galloped the short mile on the outside of the course proper in 1.44. performing in such a manner as to gain admirers for Thursday’s race.

Waitaunaha looks a greatly improved horse from last year and went well for a steeplechaser. Valpre finished a length in front of Coalbag. who was two lengths ahead of Bon Eve, in a bout over six furlongs, run in 1.225. Callapat, alone, ran five in 1.61. Schooling Tasks Ticga was schooled over three flights of hurdles, but his display was disappointing. Airtight (H. Dulieu), Maidos (L. Dulieu) and Ponjola (A. Tricklebank) gave a capital exhibition over six of the steeplechase fences. Airtight and Maidos finishing in front. Elysianor, who is engaged on Saturday, was also schooled over the big fences, jumping moderately. Town Bird, Valstreet, Glenstnr, Maunga, Tiega, Ponjola, Mountain Heath and Break o’ Day are the arrivals so far, but a lot of horses are to arrive today. British King, which appears in the Flying Handicap, was scratched today for all engagements at the Egmont meeting.
