NEW PLYMOUTH RUN CEASES LAST TRIP OF NGAPUHI The last trip in the Onehunga-Xew Plymouth passenger service finished on Saturday when the Xorthern Company’s steamer Xgapuhi arrived at Onehunga. The service had been in continuous running for 54 3-ears. Captain W. Park has been on this route for 16 3-ears, and looks upon the cessation of the service philosophicallv*. “XL is part of the march of progress,” he said. ‘‘Yesterday people travelled by boat: todav* the}- are motoring; tomorrow they will probably The last trip was accomplished in perfect calm. The sea was like a millpond—very different from what it can be on that coastal run. This route is still the shortest way of reaching Taranaki from Auckland. The distance by sea is onl3- 135 miles, the same as b>- air. and the trip took from 10 to 14 hours b3* steamer. By road the shortest distance is 250 miles.
The Kgapuhi left Onehunga again on Saturday afternoon to proceed round the Xorth Cape to Auckland, where she takes up the Auckland-Rus-sell service to relieve the Clansman for overhaul.
