Spectacular Contest for Cambridge Cup

GANG AWA’ IMPROVES FAVOURITES WELL ROUTED After her failures in the Hastings, Hawera and Taranaki Cups, Gang Awa showed improvement by hanging on with rare game ness to win the principal event on the Cambridge card. The Longburntrained daughter of Peterwah and Ivy Pointer was not in much demand on the machine, and her admirers reaped a double-figure reward.

There was spirited speculation after the candidates had done their preliminaries, public opinion favouring the Tamahere-traincd Te Wahia, who carried £426, Peter Pirate was next selec- . tion with £379, while Richore, £OSB, Warplane, £347, Dealer, £330, and Dan Direct, £314, all had solid following. Hal Chimes and Great Baliin were also more favoured than the eventual winner,* Gang Awa, who was entrusted with only £lB9. Peter Pirate stood on the mark and lost a lot of ground, while Dealer was slow to get going. Great Ballin jumped out smartly, but in a few stuides tangled, and Nella Dillon dashed away, F. Smith getting on the rails. At the end of two furlongs she was attended by Riqhore, Lord Nepean and Great Ballin, and when the half-mile was reached in 1.13 1-5 the order was Nella Dillon, Richore, Lord Nepean, Gang Awa, Great Ballin, Dan Direct, Reliance and Dealer. Gang Awa was on terms with the leader at the mil© station in 2.20 1-5, where they were followed by Richore, Lord Nepean. Dealer, Reliance, Great Ballin, Te Wahia, and Dan Direct, with the back-markers, Hal Chimes and Warplane, handy. Gang Awa then went to the head of affairs and there were several changing positions along the back. Dan Direct ran up fast on the outer, while Dealer and Te Wahia improved. Gang Awa passed the 12-fur-long disc in 3.28 2-5, and sailed along for the straight in front of Dealer, Te Wahia, Richore, Dan Direct, Nella Dillon, who was stopping, Warplane and Hal Chimes. Once round the bend the field closed up, and the tussle began in earnest. W. Hughes was keeping Gang Awa pegging along in front, while Dealer, Richore and Te Wahia challenged hotly-. The favourite was don© with. inside the distance, where Dan Direct was called upon for a final rattle, but the roan stopped quickly-. Warplane, who skipped after entering the straight, and Hal Chimes also appeared in the picture, but Gang Awa hung on gamely to pass the judge half a length to the good in 4.37. Richore was second three lengths in front of Dealer, with Hal Chimes and Warplane almost together a length back. Then came Reliance, Dan Direct, Te Wahia and Explosion. The Presentation Owner J. A. Mitchell was a proud man when he stepped forward to re-

ceive the handsome canteen of cutlery which accompanied the big stake. In making the presentation speech, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, after referring to the sporting action of the Cambridge business people in donating such a fine and useful trophy, congratulated the recipient on the splendid performance of his pacer, and driver Hughes on his good display with the reins. It was pleasing to the club as well as the public to see large owners from other parts of the island patronising the fixture, and proved the attractiveness of the sport provided by the country management. Replying, Mr. Mitchell expressed pleasure at accepting such a valuable trophy-. He had won many cups, but would regard tlie case of cutleryr as one of his best treasures. The function closed with cheers for owner, driver and pacer, and the donors of the trophy.
