Big Keelers Race In Shifting Breeze

SATURDAYS YACHTING In a light but shifting breeze on Saturday afternoon the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a cruising race to Man o' War Bay, Waiheke. Windward securing a close victory The race was a general handicap, the original course to Kawau being abandoned because of the light conditions. The order of starting was:—-Alexa. 40m, starting time 1.50 p.m-; Janet, 39 min, 1.51 p.m.; Katuku. 34m. 1.56p.m.; Kangi, 30m. 2 p.m.; Ladye Wilma. Windward, Kotiri. 21m. 2.9 p.m : Waitangi. 20m, 2.10 p.m.; Ida. 17m, 2.1 3 p.m: Prize, Rawene (23m late), llui. 2.19 p.m Thelma. 2m (2.2 S p.m ); lorangi, Ariki scr, 2.30 p.m. At the outset a light sou-wester was blowing but the breeze shifted later to the south lorangi, holding an inshore position, kept her place, but others, including Waitangi and Ariki. were becalmed. Off Cowes lorangi picked up six boats and appeared a certainty. but Windward came up splendidly and, running under the larger yacht's lee. slipped home with 25sec to spare.
