WAKA TAKES THE WATER
NORTHERN COMPANY’S NEW AUXILIARY SCHOONER BUILT IN AUCKLAND The Northern Steamship Company’s new auxiliary schooner Waka was launched from Mr. George Niccol’s yards at Freeman’s Bay yesterday afternoon. JShe was towed round to Prince’s Wharf and berthed there, and her steel mast is to be stepped tomorrow, while her 300 horse-power Diesel engines are expected to arrive from England on Friday. It is expected that the Waka will be ready for service before the end of next month. A strongly-built craft, her principal dimensions are: Length, 112 ft.; beam, 27ft.; draught. Bft. With the Waka in commission the Northern Company will have ten auxiliary vessels. The company now operates the Ilauturu (which is engaged in the Onehunga-West Coast service) and the Toa. Paroto, Motu, Otimai, Tuhoe. Pono, Toreo and Ronaki. Some of the vessels are running in services which were formerly conducted by the company’s steamers.
