WITH THE BOY SCOUTS

No. 1 Division District Scoutmaster Walls advises that a sports daj' for troops of No. 1 Division will be held on Saturday, December 14, at the Bayfield School grounds, Jervois Road, commencing at 2 p.m. All troops in the division will be taking part. Two silver cups, one for the wanning troop and a miniature for the winning Scout, will be competed for,. After the sports the patrol-leaders will entertain the Scoutmasters at tea_ at West Street, after which there will be a social for patrol-leaders and scoutmasters. * * * A meeting of Scouters was held on December 5 at Dalgety’s Buildings with Commissioner Holdsworth in the chair. There was a good attendance, and much of importance was dealt with. The following notes have been received from the Victory Sea Scouts: The Whaler is in good trim for the season, freshly painted, with her new rigging, and a new set of sails. The Christmas camp is to be held at Onetangi, and approximately 35 boys are to attend. Our new Scoutmaster, Mr. Lascelle, and First Mate, Mr. Dean, will be in charge, and. given fine weather the camp is assured of being a good one. The committee is holding a Paddy’s market at All Saints’ Hall, Ponsonby, on December IS, to raise funds for the camp. Hawkey© forwards the folio wing First Gordon news: “The seventh birthday celebrations of the First Gordon Troop were held last Saturday in the Gaiety Hall, Grey Lynn. The proceedings opened with the inspection of the Group by Commissioner W. J. Holdsworth, who was accompanied by Scout-Commissioner Boswell and Cub-Commissioner Veart. “In presenting the annual report, the Group Committee chairman mentioned that the group's activities were very much handicapped by its not having its own hall or den. After a display by the Scouts, Commissioner Holdsworth spoke a few appropriate words to both parents and boys, and then

made the following presentations: Best all-round cub, senior, Sixer X. Collins; best attendance and progress. Sixer L. Widdows; best progress shown, Scout A. Watson; best attendance, Scout R. Dowsing; greatest help to Scoutmaster, Leader F. Whiting; winner of patrol competition, Kiwi Patrol. “Opportunity was also taken to present the committee secretary. Mrs. E. Whiting, with a silver thanks badge, as a small token of appreciation of her untiring efforts and work on behalf of the group. Humorous recitations by Rover Trevor Binns (Grey Lynn Rovers), songs by Miss Feayer, a Spanish dance by Miss Victory Kerr (pupil of Madame Valeska), recitations by Sixer D. Whiting and Miss Gladys Hodder, and “Cohen on the Phone. ’ by Mr. H. P. Carlsen, were very much appreciated, as also was music provided by the St. Peter's Trio. Supper brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.” * * * In a letter written by Mr. A. IT. Ballaston, of the Westport Troop, to Mr. E. B. B. Boswell, who founded that troop in 1209, mention was made of a good turn done by the Papakura Scouts, who denied themselves a week’s attendance at the pictures and other expenses, and collected a sum for the benefit of any Scouts who had suffered during the earthquakes on the AV est Coast. They forwdrded the money to Mr. Dallaston, little dreaming that their good turn would be heard of in their own district. As no troops had suffered hardship the money was devoted to buying clothes for an old man who had been flooded out at Seddonviile. The Scout’s Promise is safe in the ; hands of such lads as those at Papakura. * * * The Cubmaster of the Edendale Pack writes that a pound night will be held on Monday, December 16, when it is hoped that all parents and friends will attend. This will conclude the activities for the year. A special church parade for Scouts and Cubs will be held next Saturday. Commissioner Holdsworth will be present. In proportion to its population there are more theatres in Italy than in any other country in the world.
