Goldfish Pool at Orakei Outfall

HOW THEY GOT THERE

JOURNEY THROUGH SEWER

VEAES ago someone in Auckland ■*- unceremoniously tipped a bowl of goldfish into the bath,, pulled the plug and sent them on a long and uncomfortable journey down the sewer.

Eventually the little goldfish wriggled their way into the tanks at the pumping station in Okahu Bay, beyond Orakei. They were still alive! Fortunately for some of the goldfish one of the men at the pumping station saw them when the machinery, which cleans the tanks, was set in motion. Otherwise the pretty fish would have died a dismal death in the depp blue waters of the Hauraki Gulf. The rescued goldfish were put Into a pool of fresh water, near the pumping station. This pool lies between the edge of the giant tanks and the high cliff beside the station, protected from the weather and open to the sun. It is an ideal home for them. And here, today, there are hundreds of goldfish, descendants of those which voyaged years ago through the dark tunnels under the City. Sometimes a few of the fish are caught and transferred to glass bowls, where they delight the residents of city homes. Some day, perhaps, history will repeat Itself in this particular fish family, but there Is no fear of a shortage of goldfish at the pumping station.
