PIE-MAKERS’ TROUBLES
EXEMPTION SOUGHT Dfiiculties confronting Auckland piernakers working under the Dominion Bakers’ and* Pastrycooks’ Award were presented to the Arbitration Court yesterday. on applications for exemption by J. R. Long. S. R. Evans and J. R. Xieper. In conjunction with these applications objections by George Browne and A. George to being joined as parties to the award were heard. Those seeking exemption contended that the hour of starting under the award. 5 a.m., was too late for piemaking, and that they were not permitted to employ unskilled labour for filling pies, because the * award required employees putting dough into tins to be paid £5 a week, which piemakers could not afford. The Master Bakers’ Union's opposition to the applications was based on the contention that as their pie-making was subject to award conditions, piemaking specialists should be governed by the same conditions. Decision was reserved.
